John Whitford (judge)
Sir John Norman Keates Whitford (24 June 1913 – 5 November 2001) was a British barrister and judge. An intellectual property specialist, he was a High Court judge, sitting in the Chancery Division, from 1970 to 1988. Biography The son of Harry Whitford and Ella Mary Keates, John Whitford (known to family and friends as "Jack") was educated at University College School, Munich University, and Peterhouse, Cambridge, where he was the president of the Cambridge University Amateur Dramatic Club. Whitford was called to the Bar by the Inner Temple in 1935 and was the pupil of Tom Denning (later Lord Denning). A member of the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, Whitford was called up immediately upon the outbreak of the Second World War, and was assigned to work on the radar. He was sent to the Middle East, then Crete, where he had to destroy his AMES during the Battle of Crete. He was evacuated with the rest of the RAF contingent on HMS ''Orion''. A Justice of the High Court, commonly known as a ‘High Court judge’, is a judge of the High Court of Justice of England and Wales, and represents the third highest level of judge in the courts of England and Wales. High Court judges are referred to as puisne (pronounced ''puny'') judges. High Court Judges wear red and black robes. High Court judges rank below Justices of Appeal, but above circuit judges. Title and form of address Upon appointment, male High Court judges are appointed Knights Bachelor and female judges made Dames Commander of the Order of the British Empire. Bencher
A bencher or Master of the Bench is a senior member of an Inn of Court in England and Wales or the Inns of Court in Northern Ireland, or the Honorable Society of King's Inns in Ireland. Benchers hold office for life once elected. A bencher can be elected while still a barrister (usually, but not always, King's Counsel in the UK or Senior Counsel in Ireland), in recognition of the contribution that the barrister has made to the life of the Inn or to the law. Others become benchers as a matter of course when appointed as a High Court judge. The Inn may elect non-members as honorary benchers – for example, distinguished judges and lawyers from other countries, eminent non-lawyers or (in the English Inns) members of the British Royal Family, who become known as "Royal Benchers" once elected. Chancery Division
The High Court of Justice in London, known properly as His Majesty's High Court of Justice in England, together with the Court of Appeal and the Crown Court, are the Senior Courts of England and Wales. Its name is abbreviated as EWHC (England and Wales High Court) for legal citation purposes. The High Court deals at first instance with all high value and high importance civil law (non-criminal) cases; it also has a supervisory jurisdiction over all subordinate courts and tribunals, with a few statutory exceptions, though there are debates as to whether these exceptions are effective. The title of Knight Bachelor is the basic rank granted to a man who has been knighted by the monarch but not inducted as a member of one of the organised orders of chivalry; it is a part of the British honours system.
