John Wheeler House (Berea, Ohio)
The John Wheeler House, also known as The Little Hermitage of Berea, was home to John Wheeler, an American educator and the first president of Baldwin University in Berea, Ohio. Baldwin College eventually merged with nearby German Wallace College to become Baldwin Wallace University. Wheeler also has a building named after him on the Baldwin Wallace University campus. Wheeler's home, built in 1834, is the oldest continuously occupied residence in Berea, Ohio. The property was coined The Little Hermitage in a nod to Andrew Jackson’s estate near Nashville. Designated a century home by the Berea Historical Society, The Wheeler House has been restored by its current owners yet retains its original character and charm. The home is a modern classic and will celebrate its bicentennial in 2034. John Wheeler was an American educator, the second principal of Baldwin Institute, and the first president of Baldwin University in Berea, Ohio. Baldwin College would eventually merge with nearby German Wallace College to become Baldwin–Wallace College. Wheeler has a building named after him on the Baldwin Wallace University campus. Biography Life Dr. John Wheeler was born in Portsmouth, England , on April 7, 1815. In 1820 his family moved to America and settled in Bellefontaine, Ohio. In 1824 Wheeler joined the Methodist Church and eventually joined the Norwalk Seminary in 1835. He attended Allegheny College from 1837-1839 and Indiana Asbury University until 1840. Once leaving Asbury University, he became principal of Franklin Institute in Indianapolis, Indiana. While there, he married Mary Yandes. The two had had seven children. Berea, Ohio
Berea ( ) is a city in Cuyahoga County in the U.S. state of Ohio and is a western suburb of Cleveland. The population was 19,093 at the 2010 census. Berea is home to Baldwin Wallace University, as well as the training facility for the Cleveland Browns and the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds. Also near Berea is the Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. History Berea was established in 1836. The first European settlers were originally from Connecticut. Berea fell within Connecticut's Western Reserve and was surveyed and divided into townships and ranges by Gideon Granger, who served as Postmaster General under President Thomas Jefferson. Abram Hickox, a Revolutionary War veteran, bought the first plot in what is today Middleburg Heights and in 1808 traveled west from Connecticut to his new purchase. Baldwin Wallace University (BW) is a private university in Berea, Ohio. It was founded in 1845 as Baldwin Institute by Methodist businessman John Baldwin. The school merged with nearby German Wallace College in 1913 to become Baldwin-Wallace College. Italianate Architecture
The Italianate style was a distinct 19th-century phase in the history of Classical architecture. Like Palladianism and Neoclassicism, the Italianate style drew its inspiration from the models and architectural vocabulary of 16th-century Italian Renaissance architecture, synthesising these with picturesque aesthetics.
