John W. Shackelford
John Williams Shackelford (November 16, 1844 – January 18, 1883) was a Confederate Civil War veteran who served one term as a Democratic U.S. Congressman from North Carolina between 1881 and 1883. Biography Shackelford was born in Richlands, North Carolina, the descendant of an early Virginia family which had settled at Shacklefords, Virginia. Civil War He enlisted in the Confederate Army at the age of 17 and rose to the rank of lieutenant during the war. State legislature In 1872, he was elected to the North Carolina House of Representatives, where he served for six years, when he was elected to the North Carolina Senate. He served a single two-year term in the Senate, before running for Congress Congress He was elected to the 47th United States Congress in 1880. Shackelford died in Washington, D.C., during his first and only term in office, in January 1883. He is buried in his hometown of Richlands. North Carolina House Of Representatives
The North Carolina House of Representatives is one of the two houses of the North Carolina General Assembly. The House is a 120-member body led by a Speaker of the House, who holds powers similar to those of the President pro-tem in the North Carolina Senate. The qualifications to be a member of the House are found in the state Constitution: "Each Representative, at the time of his election, shall be a qualified voter of the State, and shall have resided in the district for which he is chosen for one year immediately preceding his election." Elsewhere, the constitution specifies that qualified voters that are 21 are eligible for candidacy except if otherwise disqualified by the constitution, and that no elected officials may deny the existence of God, although the latter provision is no longer enforced, as it would be illegal to do so. The 47th United States Congress was a meeting of the legislative branch of the United States federal government, consisting of the United States Senate and the United States House of Representatives. It met in Washington, D.C. from March 4, 1881, to March 4, 1883, during the six months of James Garfield's presidency, and the first year and a half of Chester Arthur's presidency. The apportionment of seats in this House of Representatives was based on the Ninth Census of the United States in 1870. The House had a Republican majority; the Senate was evenly divided for the first time ever, with no vice president to break ties for most of this term. North Carolina Senate
The North Carolina Senate is the upper chamber of the North Carolina General Assembly, which along with the North Carolina House of Representatives—the lower chamber—comprises the state legislature of North Carolina. The term of office for each senator is only two years. The Senate's prerogatives and powers are similar to those of the other house, the House of Representatives. Its members do, however, represent districts that are larger than those of their colleagues in the House. The President of the Senate is the Lieutenant Governor of North Carolina, but the Lt.
