John Teasdale (wheat Farmer)
Sir John Smith Teasdale Commander of the Order of the British Empire, CBE (28 June 1881 – 2 July 1962) was an Australian wheat farmer and administrator. Teasdale was born at Alston, Cumbria, England to stonemason James Teasdale and Jane, ''née'' Maughan. He worked as a grain trade, grain merchant before his migration to Western Australia in 1911, where he and a number of his brothers settled to farm in the Bruce Rock, Western Australia, Bruce Rock area. Although the Teasdales' initial efforts were devastated by a 1914 drought, John connected with the local farming community to canvass ways of improving drought resistance. Becoming more involved in the farming community, Teasdale was an executive member of the Farmers' and Settlers' Association in 1916 and in 1922 helped found the Wheat Pool of Western Australia, touring Great Britain and the United States to gather information on farming methods. Commander Of The Order Of The British Empire
The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service. It was established on 4 June 1917 by King George V and comprises five classes across both civil and military divisions, the most senior two of which make the recipient either a knight if male or dame if female. There is also the related British Empire Medal, whose recipients are affiliated with, but not members of, the order. Recommendations for appointments to the Order of the British Empire were originally made on the nomination of the United Kingdom, the self-governing Dominions of the Empire (later Commonwealth) and the Viceroy of India. The National Party of Australia, also known as The Nationals or The Nats, is an Australian political party. Traditionally representing graziers, farmers, and regional voters generally, it began as the Australian Country Party in 1920 at a federal level. In 1975 it adopted the name National Country Party, before taking its current name in 1982. A conservative and agrarian party, the Nationals combine social conservatism with agrarian socialist economic policies. Ensuring support for farmers, either through government grants and subsidies or through community appeals, is a major focus of National Party policy. AWB Limited was a major grain marketing organisation based in Australia. Founded in 1939 by the Government of Australia as the Australian Wheat Board, in 1999 it was sold off by the government, initially to be owned by wheat growers. It was acquired by Agrium in 2010.
