John Russell (Ohio Politician)
John Russell was a Republican politician who was appointed Ohio Secretary of State from 1868-1869. John Russell was from Champaign County, Ohio. He was chief clerk in the office of Ohio Secretary of State William Henry Smith. Smith resigned the office January 14, 1868. John Russell was appointed by Governor Rutherford B. Hayes to replace him. Smith 1898 : 244 Later that year, at the State Republican Convention, Russell came in fourth of four candidates for the nomination on the first ballot, and withdrew. Biography John Russell was born September 22, 1827 in Concord Township, Champaign County, Ohio to John and Mary Russell, farmers who were originally from Virginia. He taught school and saved his money to enroll in Ohio Wesleyan University in 1849, from which he graduated. He returned home to marry Margaret M. Russell, (no relation). William Henry Smith (American Politician)
William Henry Smith (December 1, 1833 – July 27, 1896) was a newspaper editor, Republican politician who was Ohio Secretary of State 1865–1868, consolidated and managed the Associated Press, and was a compiler and editor of several historic works. Biography William Henry Smith was born December 1, 1833 at Columbia County, New York. In 1836 his parents moved to Ohio, where he received the best educational advantages the state afforded. He was a tutor, editor of the ''Literary Review'' at Cincinnati, and was an editor at the ''Cincinnati Gazette'' when the American Civil War broke out. He was active in promoting enlistments for the Union. Smith 1898 : 196 Smith was active in securing the gubernatorial nomination for John Brough, and became his private secretary upon his election to Governor in 1863. The Secretary of State of Ohio is an elected statewide official in the State of Ohio. The Secretary of state is responsible for overseeing elections in the state; registering business entities (corporations, etc.) and granting them the authority to do business within the state; registering secured transactions; and granting access to public documents. From 1803 to 1851, the Ohio Secretary of State was elected by the Ohio General Assembly to a three-year term. The 1851 Ohio Constitution made the office elective, with a two-year term. Methodist Episcopal Church
The Methodist Episcopal Church (MEC) was the oldest and largest Methodist denomination in the United States from its founding in 1784 until 1939. It was also the first religious denomination in the US to organize itself on a national basis. In 1939, the MEC reunited with two breakaway Methodist denominations (the Methodist Protestant Church and the Methodist Episcopal Church, South) to form the Methodist Church. In 1968, the Methodist Church merged with the Evangelical United Brethren Church to form the United Methodist Church. The Ohio Senate is the upper house of the Ohio General Assembly. The State Senate, which meets in the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus, first convened in 1803. Senators are elected for four year terms, staggered every two years such that half of the seats are contested at each election.
