John Holbrook Powers
John Holbrook Powers (c. 1831–1918), who was known as "Honest John," was a Nebraska pioneer who ran for governor as a populist in 1892. Powers was born in Madison County, Illinois, and served in the Union Army in the Civil War before moving to Nebraska. In 1884, Powers joined the Farmers' Alliance and rose rapidly in the organization. In 1892, he was nominated as the gubenarorial candidate of the People's Party, the political wing of the Alliance. Of the three candidates, Powers received the most votes, but after a long and bitter fight, James E. Boyd, the Democrat, was declared elected. In his ''History of Nebraska'', James Olson described Powers as "a modest man who lived in a sod house on his homestead in Hitchcock County."(Page 222). Robert B. John Leonard Powers (born November 6, 1948) is a journalist and author who wrote for ''The Boston Globe'' for more than four decades in the Sports, Metro, Sunday Magazine, and Living sections and later became a freelance correspondent for the newspaper. Many sportswriters consider him the dean of Olympic journalists; he has covered every Olympic Games (summer and winter) since 1976, excepting the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, when the U.S. boycott led the Russians to refuse to issue a visa. He may well have reported from more Olympics than any other American sportswriter. John Robert Powers (September 14, 1892 – July 21, 1977) was an American actor and founder of a New York City modeling agency. In 1923, Powers founded a modeling school. The John Robert Powers Agency represented models who aspired to success in the Hollywood film industry. While Powers' clientele was overwhelmingly female, the school also represented several men. The agency was the subject of a 1943 musical comedy, ''The Powers Girl'', in which Alan Mowbray portrayed Powers; the film featured Anne Shirley and Carole Landis as aspiring models. (born John Richbourg, August 20, 1910 - February 15, 1986) was an American radio disc jockey who attained fame in the 1950s and 1960s for playing rhythm and blues music on Nashville radio station WLAC. He was also a notable record producer and artist manager. Richbourg was arguably the most popular and charismatic of the four announcers at WLAC who showcased popular African-American music in nightly programs from the late 1940s to the early 1970s. The world's first full-time copywriter, he worked for the department stores Lord & Taylor and Wanamaker's before becoming a freelancer in 1886.
