John Phillips (snooker Player)
John Phillips (1935–2008) was a Scottish professional snooker player. Career Phillips was born in Springburn. In 1952, he eliminated the reigning champion, Mark Wildman, from the 1952 British youth snooker tournament, before losing to Gary Owen in the second round. He won the Scottish amateur snooker championship in 1958, 1959, 1961, 1964 and 1971, and was runner-up in 1975. At the 1970 World Amateur Snooker Championship he won four of his six round-robin group matches, which was not enough to qualify for the knockout stage. Whilst an amateur player, he worked as a postman. He was accepted as a professional by the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA) in 1981. At the 1982 Scottish Professional Championship, he lost 3–6 to Eddie Sinclair, and his first qualifying round match at the 1982 World Snooker Championship resulted in a 3–9 defeat by Paul Medati. Snooker (pronounced , ) is a cue sport played on a rectangular table covered with a green cloth called baize, with six pockets, one at each corner and one in the middle of each long side. Paul Medati
Paul Medati (14 November 1943 – 29 November 2008) was an English professional snooker and pool player. Career Medati was born in Ordsall, Salford, Lancashire to Maltese parents, and attended St. Joseph's Primary School. After playing snooker for many years, he turned professional in 1981, and perhaps the best performance of his career came when he reached the last 16 of the 1983 UK Championship, where he was defeated 9-1 by eventual winner Alex Higgins. In 1986, Higgins appeared at the 1986 Classic with a black eye, courtesy of a disagreement with Medati. 1982 UK Championship
The 1982 UK Championship (also known as the 1982 Coral UK Championship for sponsorship reasons) was a professional non-Snooker world rankings, ranking snooker tournament that took place at the Preston Guild Hall, Guild Hall in Preston, Lancashire, Preston, England, between 20 November and 4 December 1982. This was the sixth edition of the UK Championship and the fifth staging of the competition in Preston. The event was sponsored by Coral (bookmaker), Coral for the fifth year in a row. The televised stages were shown on the BBC from 27 November through to the end of the championship. Terry Griffiths won his first and only UK title by winning the last three frames of the final to defeat Alex Higgins 16–15. On his way to victory, Griffiths also beat defending champion Steve Davis, who had defeated him in 1981 UK Championship, the previous year's final. 1982 Professional Players Tournament
The 1982 World Open (snooker), Professional Players Tournament was a professional Snooker world rankings, ranking snooker tournament that took place in two venues in the Birmingham area. One was at the La Reserve in Sutton Coldfield and the other was the International Snooker Club in Aston. It was the first tournament in a series which is now known as the World Open (snooker), World Open. The event was untelevised and unsponsored. Ray Reardon defeated Jimmy White 10–5 in the final, to win the first prize of £5,000 and his first ranking tournament win since the 1978 World Snooker Championship, 1978 World Championship. Reardon became the oldest winner of a ranking event at the age of 50 years and 14 days. He remains the oldest winner of a ranking event. 1982 International Open
The 1982 Jameson International Open was a professional ranking snooker tournament that took place between 27 September to 10 October 1982 at the Assembly Rooms in Derby, England. This was the first tournament outside of the World Snooker Championship to be given ranking status. Tony Knowles won the tournament, defeating David Taylor 9–6 in the final. Summary The WPBSA had been using a ranking system based on performances in the last three world championships. However they modified the system for the 1982–83 season to include the two open entry events in the ranking system. These were the Jameson International Open and the Professional Players Tournament which was held immediately afterwards. 1982 Bass And Golden Leisure Classic
The 1982 Bass and Golden Leisure Classic was a professional invitational snooker tournament which took place on 29 May 1982. The tournament was open to professional players who were not ranked in the top sixteen. The competition was held at the Golden Leisure Snooker Centre in Liverpool, was jointly sponsored by Golden Leisure and Bass-Charrington. It featured 22 professional players. The ten qualifying matches were played under a best-of-three frames format, the last-16, quarter-final and semi-final matches best of five, and the final was best of seven. Rex Williams won the event, beating Ray Edmonds 4–1 in the final. Losing semi-finalists Eugene Hughes and Mike Hallett took part in a playoff match for third place, which Hughes won 2–0, making of 91 and 73. The event had a total prize fund of £2,150. 1982 World Snooker Championship
The 1982 World Snooker Championship (officially the 1982 Embassy World Snooker Championship) was a professional snooker tournament that took place between 30 April and 16 May 1982 at the Crucible Theatre, in Sheffield, England. It was the only event of the 1981–82 snooker season which carried world ranking points. Embassy, a British cigarette company, sponsored the tournament, and the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA) governed the organisation of the event. It had a prize fund of £110,000, with the winner receiving £25,000. The defending champion Steve Davis had defeated Doug Mountjoy with a score of 18–12 in the previous year's final. Springburn
Springburn ( gd, Allt an Fhuairainn) is an inner-city district in the north of the Scottish city of Glasgow, made up of generally working-class households. Springburn developed from a rural hamlet at the beginning of the 19th century. Its industrial expansion began with the establishment of a chemical works by Charles Tennant on the newly opened Monkland Canal at nearby St. Rollox in 1799, which later became part of the United Alkali Company. Eddie Sinclair
Eddie Sinclair (5 May 1937 – January 2005) was a Scottish professional snooker player. Career Sinclair turned professional in 1979 at the relatively advanced age of 42, reaching a high ranking of 26th in 1982 and holding that position for two years. He won the 1980 and 1982 editions of the Scottish Professional Championship, beating Chris Ross 11–6 in the former and Ian Black 11–7 in the latter, and reached the final in 1983 and 1985, losing to Murdo MacLeod 11-9 and 10–2. Sinclair enjoyed his best performance in a ranking event at the 1982 Professional Players Tournament, where he beat the veteran Fred Davis 5–2 and Jim Meadowcroft 5–3 before being defeated 5–3 by Terry Griffiths in the last 16.
