John Patten (American Politician)
Major John Patten (April 26, 1746 – December 26, 1800) was a United States farmer and politician from Dover, in Kent County, Delaware. He was an officer of the Continental Army in the American Revolution, a Continental Congressman, and a member of the Democratic-Republican Party, who served in the Delaware General Assembly and as a United States representative from Delaware. Early life and family Patten was born at Tyn Head Court near Dover in the Delaware Colony, son of John Patten and Ann Maxwell. This property is near Dover Air Force Base, near the farms of Caesar Rodney and John Dickinson. He was a farmer, who after the American Revolution married Ann Haslet, daughter of the first Colonel of the 1st Delaware Regiment, John Haslet. She died soon thereafter, and he married Mary Miller Loockerman, daughter of the Rev. John Miller and widow of Vincent Loockerman. Jack Patten
John Thomas Patten (27 March 1905 – 12 October 1957) was an Aboriginal Australian civil rights activist and journalist. Biography John Patten was born in 1905 to John James Patten and Christina Mary Patten, née Middleton, at Cummeragunja Reserve, an Aboriginal reserve in New South Wales. Patten was educated at public schools in Tumbarumba and West Wyalong, and attended high school at West Wyalong. Following high school, Patten was unsuccessful in joining the Navy and worked for the Sydney Municipal Council. To make ends meet he occasionally worked as a boxer. While boxing at Casino in 1931, Patten married Selina Avery. During the 1930s he became an experienced organiser and public speaker, speaking regularly on Aboriginal rights at the Domain on Sunday afternoons, along with other Aboriginal activists such as Pearl Gibbs and Tom Foster. John Trevor Patten (born 13 June 1936), known professionally as Johnny Jarrett, is an Australian Aboriginal elder and community leader, former professional rugby league footballer and professional boxer. Biography John Patten was born in 1936 to John Thomas Patten and Selina Patten, née Avery at Sydney in New South Wales and is a descendant of the Yorta Yorta and Bundjalung peoples. A member of the Stolen Generations, as an infant Patten was taken from his parents at Grafton in northern New South Wales and placed at Bomaderry Aboriginal Children's Home in the south of the state. Following this removal Patten was located by his father and the pair fled from New South Wales, to the safety of Barmah in Victoria, near his father's family at Cummeragunja. John Haggitt Charles Patten, Baron Patten, (born 17 July 1945) is a former Conservative Member of Parliament for Oxford West and Abingdon. Early life A Roman Catholic, he was educated by the Jesuits at Wimbledon College before graduating from Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge. Parliamentary career He was first elected for Oxford in 1979, transferring to Oxford West and Abingdon in 1983 after boundary changes divided the seat. He stood down at the 1997 general election. The seat was subsequently won by the Liberal Democrat Evan Harris. Patten was offered the role as Secretary of State for Northern Ireland by Margaret Thatcher but refused.
