John Owens (merchant)
John Owens (1790 – 29 July 1846) was an English merchant and philanthropist, whose bequest helped found part of the University of Manchester. Life and career Owens was born in Manchester, England, in 1790. His father was Owen Owens, a native of Holywell in Flintshire, Wales, who married Sarah Humphreys in 1788 and soon after moved with her to the rapidly industrialising town of Manchester. Once there, he became a prosperous merchant. Historians such as H. B. Charlton and William Whyte have noted that details of the life of John Owens are sparse and that, according to Whyte, he is historically a "shadowy" character. The only one of three brothers to survive infancy, Owens was educated at a private school at Ardwick Green until around the age of 14. He then began work for his father's firm, which advertised itself as "hat-linings, currier and furrier". John Owens (Australian Politician)
John Downes Owens (1809 – 26 November 1866) was a medical doctor, miner's representative and politician in colonial Victoria (Australia), a member of the Victorian Legislative Council and later, the Victorian Legislative Assembly. Owens was born in Shropshire, England, the son of John Owens, a surgeon, and his wife Martha Owens, ''née'' Downes. Owens junior became doctor of medicine in 1840. In 1850 he sailed for Sydney, then in 1852 went to Melbourne and then Bendigo where he established a medical practice. Owens was a nominated member of the Victorian Legislative Council from 5 November 1855 until the original Council was abolished in March 1856. Owens was a member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly for Loddon from November 1856 – August 1859; and for Mandurang from August 1861 to July 1863. John Owens (Gaelic Footballer)
John Owens (born 1966) is an Irish former Gaelic footballer who played as a right wing-back at senior level for the Tipperary and Leitrim county teams. Born in Loughinisland, County Down, Owens first played competitive Gaelic football during his schooling at St Colman's College and Clonmel High School. He arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of fifteen when he first linked up with the Leitrim and minor team before later joining the Tipperary minor, under-21 and junior sides. He joined the Tipperary senior panel during the 1985 championship. Owens subsequently became a regular member of the starting fifteen while he also lined out with the Leitrim senior team. As a member of the Munster inter-provincial team on a number of occasions Owens never won a Railway Cup medal. At club level he is a five-time championship medallist with Moyle Rovers.
