John Ngiraked
John Obeldabl Ngiraked was a Palauan politician. Ngiraked was born in 1932 in Ngiwal. He attended George Washington High School in Guam. Ngiraked was elected in 1965 to the Congress of Micronesia. He was elected as the president of the upper chamber in July 1965, but was replaced by Tosiwo Nakayama in the same month. He was re-elected as president again from July 1967 to 1969. Roman Tmetuchl was his political rival for a senate seat in the 1970 elections to the Congress of Micronesia. Ngiraked ran unsuccessfully for the presidency of Palau in the elections of 1980, but lost to Haruo Remeliik. In 1984, before Remeliik's reelection, Ngiraked declared that Remeliik's government was in despair and called on the president to resign. Remeliik was assassinated in June 1985. Congress Of The Trust Territory Of The Pacific Islands
The Congress of Micronesia was a bicameral legislature in Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands from 1964 to 1979. History The Congress was established on 28 September 1964, when the US Secretary of the Interior Stewart Udall issued order no. 2882. It replaced the previous Council of Micronesia, which had been based outside the Trust Territory in Guam. The first elections were held in January 1965. The Congress was initially composed of a House of Delegates and General Assembly, which were later renamed the Senate and House of Representatives. The Congress building was burnt down in an arson attack on 20 February 1970. Composition The Senate had 12 members, two from each of the six districts. Lazarus Salii
Lazarus Eitaro Salii (17 November 1936 – 20 August 1988) was a politician from Palau. He served as the second elected President of Palau from 25 October 1985 until he committed suicide on 20 August 1988, amid bribery allegations. Salii was elected to the Senate of Micronesian Congress. He was involved in the Palau Constitutional Convention of 1978. After the Constitution took effect in 1981, he became an ambassador. As ambassador, he was given wide-ranging authority to negotiate with the U.S. ambassador. He was ambassador until 1984, when he became a senator, representing Koror in the Palau National Congress. When President Haruo Remeliik was assassinated on 30 June 1985, Salii was elected in August to finish his term of office (although Thomas Remengesau and then Alfonso Oiterong served in the interim). Tosiwo Nakayama
was the first President of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM). He served two terms from 1979 until 1987. Biography Nakayama was born on November 23, 1931, on Piserach Island, part of Nomwunweito Atoll in what is now Chuuk State. At the time of his birth it formed part of the Japanese-administered South Seas Mandate. He had a Japanese father and a native mother. and is the older brother of FSM's ambassador to Japan, Masao Nakayama. In 1955 he was awarded a Trust Territory Scholarship that allowed him to study for two years at University High School and for two years at the University of Hawaii. Upon his return in 1958 from his formal education experience he was appointed as the Supervisor of Adult Education. He was later appointed as the Political and Economic Advisor to the District Administration. Haruo Remeliik
Haruo Ignacio Remeliik (1 June 1933 – 30 June 1985) was a politician from Palau. He served as the first President of Palau from 2 March 1981 until his assassination on 30 June 1985. He is buried at Kloulklubed in his home state of Peleliu. Remeliik was of mixed Japanese and Palauan descent. Early life Remeliik studied priesthood in Truk. Later he returned to Palau and became an associate judge. In 1968, he won a seat in Palau legislature and became vice speaker. In 1970 he was appointed as deputy district administrator for the Palau district of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. In 1978 he became a member and later also president of the constitutional convention. In 1980, he was elected as the first President of Palau, and he won re-election in 1984. General elections were held in Palau on 4 November 1980 to elect a President, Vice-President, Senate and House of Delegates. All candidates ran as independents. Haruo Remeliik won the election for President with 31.2% of the vote, whilst Alfonso Oiterong was elected Vice-President. Voter turnout was 80%.
