John Munne Moreland
John "Jock" Munne Moreland (b 11 January 1921 Wanganui d. June 2012) was a New Zealand marine biologist and ichthyologist who worked at the Dominion Museum, later the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, in Wellington. Career He was brought up and attended school in Wanganui before joining the 3rd Division (New Zealand) serving in the Pacific Theatre during and the 2nd Division (New Zealand) during World War 2. After demobilising he joined the staff of the Dominion Museum. He graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Biology from the Victoria University of Wellington in 1958. He was appointed as an Assistant Zoologist, with Charles McCann , who was the only vertebrate Zoologist at the museum at the time. McCann's interest was in marine mammals so he tasked Moreland with curating the collection of seabirds. Wanganui
Whanganui (; ), also spelled Wanganui, is a city in the Manawatū-Whanganui region of New Zealand. The city is located on the west coast of the North Island at the mouth of the Whanganui River, New Zealand's longest navigable waterway. Whanganui is the 19th most-populous urban area in New Zealand and the second-most-populous in Manawatū-Whanganui, with a population of as of . Whanganui is the ancestral home of Te Āti Haunui-a-Pāpārangi and other Whanganui Māori tribes. Alert Pigfish
The Alert pigfish (''Alertichthys blacki'') is a species of marine ray finned fish, a pigfish belonging to the family Congiopodidae. It is the only species in the monotypic genus ''Alertichthys''. This species is endemic to the waters around New Zealand. Taxonomy The Alert pigfish was first formally described in 1960 by the New Zealand ichthyologist John Munne Moreland with they type locality given as east of the Otago Peninsula at 45°47'S, 171°7'E. Moreland placed his new species in the monotypic genus ''Alertichthys''. The 5th edition of ''Fishes of the World'' classifies ''Alertichthys'' within the family Congiopodidae but other authorities classify this genus and ''Zanclorhynchus'' within the family Zanclorhynchidae. Percophidae
The Percophidae, duckbills, are a family of percomorph fishes, from the order Trachiniformes, found in tropical and subtropical waters of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans and in the southwestern and southeastern Pacific. They are small fishes: the largest species, the Brazilian flathead, ''Percophis brasiliensis'', grows up to about , but to is more typical. A few species are fished commercially, including the Brazilian flathead. Characteristics The species in the family Percophidae are elongated, benthic fishes with an anteriorly depressed head, a broad flat snout which gives rise to the common name duckbills. New Zealand Urchin Clingfish
The New Zealand urchin clingfish (''Dellichthys morelandi'') is a clingfish. It is found around New Zealand wherever sea urchins are present. Its length is between 2 and 3 cm. This species was described by John C. Briggs in 1955 and was thought to be the sole species in the monotypic genus '' Dellichthys'' until 2018 when a new species, '' Dellichthys trnskii'', was described after being discovered from intertidal and shallow coastal waters of New Zealand in that year. The deepsea pigfish (''Congiopodus coriaceus'') is a species of marine ray-finned fish belonging to the family Congiopodidae, the horsefishes or pigfishes. Eric Heath (artist)
Eric Walmsley Heath (born 23 November 1923) is a New Zealand artist, illustrator, and cartoonist. Life and work Heath was born in Wellington and began his professional life working as an filing clerk for ''The Evening Post''. He joined the Royal New Zealand Air Force during the Second World War and served with the Air Sea Rescue Catalina Squadron in the Solomon Islands. After his military service Heath returned to working for ''The Evening Post'', training as a photo engraver. Subsequent to this he worked as a freelance artist. In 1965, Heath had his first cartoon published in '' The Dominion'' newspaper. He was the editorial cartoonist for the ''Dominion'' from 1964 until 1993 and produced five cartoons a week for 28 years.
