John McMillan (diplomat)
John Mill McMillan (December 1914 – 25 November 1999) was a former Australian public servant and diplomat. During his career, he held several prominent diplomatic posts, including Australian Ambassador to Israel (1960–1963); Brazil (1965–1970); Turkey (1973–1976); and the Holy See (1974–1978) and High Commissioner to Ghana (1970–1973) and Malta (1976–1978). Life and career McMillan, whose father was an employee at the Victorian Public Works Department, was educated at Mentone Grammar School and Melbourne Grammar School. He attended the University of Melbourne, living at Trinity College and in 1934 was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree, with honours, having won the Wyselaskie Scholarship in Modern Languages that year also. He later completed a Master of Arts and while in Canberra he graduated with a Bachelor of Laws. The Ambassador of Australia to Turkey is an officer of the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the head of the Embassy of the Commonwealth of Australia to the Republic of Turkey. Alan McNicoll
Vice Admiral Sir Alan Wedel Ramsay McNicoll, (3 April 1908 – 11 October 1987) was a senior officer in the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) and a diplomat. Born in Melbourne, he entered the Royal Australian Naval College at the age of thirteen and graduated in 1926. Following training and staff appointments in Australia and the United Kingdom, he was attached to the Royal Navy at the outbreak of the Second World War. As torpedo officer of the 1st Submarine Flotilla in the Mediterranean theatre, McNicoll was decorated with the George Medal in 1941 for disarming enemy ordnance. He served aboard from 1942, sailing in support of several Arctic convoys and taking part in the Allied invasion of Sicily. McNicoll was posted for staff duties with the Admiralty from September 1943 and was involved in the planning of the Normandy landings. He returned to Australia in October 1944. Richard Woolcott
Richard Arthur Woolcott (born 11 June 1927) is a retired Australian public servant, diplomat, author and commentator. Early years Woolcott was educated at Geelong Grammar School, Cranbrook School and the University of Melbourne, before becoming a member of the Australian Diplomatic Service. Woolcott's first posting in the diplomatic service was as Third Secretary in the Australian Embassy Moscow. Woolcott married Danish-born Birgit Christensen in London, England in July 1952 and the couple moved to Moscow shortly after the wedding. John Douglas Lloyd Hood (31 May 1904 – 3 October 1991) was an Australian diplomat who served as Australia's second permanent representative to the United Nations and ambassador to Germany. Early life and education Hood was born in Adelaide on 31 May 1904, the son of William Percy Hood and Alexandrina Douglas. His father was the head of the Tasmanian branch of the Australian Mutual Provident Society and Hood was educated at Kyne College in Adelaide (1915–1917) and The Hutchins School in Sandy Bay, Tasmania (1918–1921). After taking a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Tasmania, at age 21 Hood's academic success was recognised in 1926 with the award of being Tasmania's recipient of the Rhodes Scholarship to study at the University of Oxford. Bertram Charles Ballard (22 January 1903 – 15 July 1981) was an Australian public servant and diplomat. Life and career Ballard was born on 22 January 1903 in Toorak, Melbourne the eldest of three children in his family. He attended Scotch College and then the University of Melbourne, graduating with first-class honours. Ballard joined the Commonwealth Public Service as Australian government solicitor in New Hebrides, Vanuatu in 1934. On 6 August 1940, Ballard was appointed Australia's first official representative in Nouméa, New Caledonia. He was tasked with encouraging war-time cooperation between New Caledonia and Australia and was also responsible for reporting to the Australian Government on economic and political affairs.
