John McDonald Mowat
John McDonald Mowat (February 17, 1872 – October 7, 1916) was a lawyer and politician in Ontario, Canada. He served as mayor of Kingston from 1906 to 1907. Known as Major John, the son of John Bower Mowat and Emma McDonald, he was called to the Ontario bar in 1898. Mowat practised law in Kingston and later in Vancouver, British Columbia. He ran unsuccessfully for the Kingston seat in the Canadian House of Commons in 1911, losing to William Folger Nickle. He went overseas as a Major with a Vancouver regiment during World War I and was killed in action at the age of 44. His nephew Angus McGill Mowat also served in World War I, and his great-nephew is Canadian author Farley Mowat. His name is inscribed on the Vimy Memorial. Kingston is a city in Ontario, Canada. It is located on the north-eastern end of Lake Ontario, at the beginning of the St. Lawrence River and at the mouth of the Cataraqui River (south end of the Rideau Canal). The city is midway between Toronto, Ontario and Montreal, Quebec. Canadian National Vimy Memorial
The Canadian National Vimy Memorial is a war memorial site in France dedicated to the memory of Canadian Expeditionary Force members killed during the First World War. It also serves as the place of commemoration for Canadian soldiers of the First World War killed or presumed dead in France who have no known grave. The monument is the centrepiece of a preserved battlefield park that encompasses a portion of the ground over which the Canadian Corps made their assault during the initial Battle of Vimy Ridge offensive of the Battle of Arras. The Battle of Vimy Ridge was the first time all four divisions of the Canadian Expeditionary Force participated in a battle as a cohesive formation, and it became a Canadian national symbol of achievement and sacrifice. William Folger Nickle
William Folger Nickle KC (December 31, 1869 - November 15, 1957) was a Canadian politician who served both as a member of the House of Commons of Canada and in the Ontario legislature where he rose to the position of Attorney-General of Ontario. He is best known for the Nickle Resolution that ended the practice of knighthoods and peerages being awarded to Canadians. Born in Kingston, Ontario, the son of William Nickle, Nickle was educated at Queen's University and Osgoode Hall. He was called to the Ontario bar in 1896 and set up a law practice in Kingston. He entered local politics and was elected to the school board 1904 and then served on Kingston city council from 1905 until 1908. Kingston (electoral District)
Kingston was a federal electoral district represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1867 to 1925 and from 1953 to 1968. It was located in the province of Ontario. It was created by the British North America Act of 1867, and initially consisted of the city of Kingston, Ontario. In 1903, it was expanded to include the village of Portsmouth. The electoral district was abolished in 1924 when it was redistributed into Kingston City riding. In 1952, a new Kingston riding was created from Kingston City and parts of Frontenac—Addington ridings.
