John Joe Nerney
John Joe Nerney (1 April 1922 – 24 June 2015) was an Irish Gaelic footballer who played as a left corner-forward with the Roscommon senior team. Born in Croghan, County Roscommon, Nerney first played competitive football in his youth. He arrived on the inert-county scene at the age of seventeen when he first linked up with the Roscommon minor team. He subsequently joined the Roscommon senior team. Nerney was a regular on the starting fifteen for over a decade and won one All-Ireland medal and several Connacht medals. He was an All-Ireland runner-up on one occasion. At club level Nerney played with Boyle. In retirement from playing Nerney became involved in team management and coaching. Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach; short name '), commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA or Football is an Irish team sport. It is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the ball into the other team's goals (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goals and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the football up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). In the game, two types of scores are possible: points and goals. A point is awarded for kicking or hand-passing the ball over the crossbar , signalled by the umpire raising a white flag. Roscommon GAA
The Roscommon County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) ( ga, Cumann Lúthchleas Gael, Coiste Chontae Ros Comáin) or Roscommon GAA is one of the 32 county boards of the GAA in Ireland, and is responsible for Gaelic games in County Roscommon. The county board is also responsible for the Roscommon county teams. The county football team was the third from the province of Connacht to win an All-Ireland Senior Football Championship (SFC), following Galway and Mayo. Croghan, County Roscommon
Croghan ( ), is a townland and village in County Roscommon, Ireland. It is situated centrally between the towns of Boyle, Elphin and Carrick on Shannon. History The village dates from the late 1700s and was set up by then local landlord Lloyd. The Lloyd family were granted the lands of Croghan which originally were owned by the Mcdermott's in 1680. Lloyd built a house in the 1700s where the GAA Club Rooms now stand, and in 1830 built a larger mansion nearby. Croghan village consisted of 30 houses all facing east towards the big house in a north–south direction. The only building on the other side of street was Donnellan's shop (1765), which in 1796 became the Roman Catholic Church. Croghan is now the parish name for this area incorporating the old parishes of Killukin, Killumod, Tumna, Kilcola and Estersnow. These were former monastic sites dating back up to 1500 years. The All-Ireland Senior Football Championship (SFC) ( ga, Craobh Shinsir Peile na hÉireann) is the premier competition in Gaelic football. An annual tournament organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), it is contested by the county teams in All-Ireland. The first tournament was held in 1887; it has been held every year since 1889. Each tournament ends with a final, played by the 35th Sunday of the year at Croke Park in Dublin, with the winning team receiving the Sam Maguire Cup. Connacht Senior Football Championship
The Connacht Senior Football Championship is an annual Gaelic football competition for the senior county teams of Connacht GAA. All of the counties of Connacht participate in the championship, as well as counties London and New York. The winning team receives the Nestor Cup. The Connacht Senior Football Championship is run on a knock-out basis in which once a team loses they are eliminated from the competition. A series of games are played during the summer months and the final is played in June or July. The winner progresses directly to the All-Ireland Super 8s, while losing teams progress to the All-Ireland Qualifiers (before 2001 the All-Ireland was a straight knock-out format meaning all losing teams were eliminated after a single defeat). Boyle GAA ( Irish: ''CLG Mainistir na Búille'') is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in Boyle, County Roscommon. The club was founded in 1889 and plays in maroon and white. History In 1889, Roscommon's first county convention took place in Boyle, where its county board was first founded. Five Boyle clubs were represented at the convention, Knockarush, Lowparks, Owen Roes, Tawnytaskin and Democrats. In 1890 the Boyle 'Young Irelanders' won the clubs first Senior championship.
