John Jackson (speedway Rider)
John Jackson (born 26 June 1952) is a former speedway rider from England. Speedway career Jackson rode in the top two tiers of British Speedway from 1970 to 1983, riding for various clubs. He was instrumental in helping the Crewe Kings to win the league title during the 1972 British League Division Two season. He consistently appeared in the leading averages throughout the 1970s. He won the National League Pairs, partnering Chris Turner for the Ellesmere Port Gunners, during the 1976 National League season. He won another Pairs championship, partnering Steve Finch, during the 1978 National League season. Christopher Turner (born 28 May 1958) is a former motorcycle speedway rider from England. Biography Born in Crewe, Cheshire, Turner took up speedway at the age of fourteen at the training school at Belle Vue.Oakes, Peter & Mauger, Ivan (1976) ''Who's Who of World Speedway'', Studio Publications, , p. 107 He also competed in grasstrack racing as a junior. Crewe Kings Riders
Crewe () is a railway town and civil parish in the unitary authority of Cheshire East in Cheshire, England. The Crewe built-up area had a total population of 75,556 in 2011, which also covers parts of the adjacent civil parishes of Willaston, Shavington cum Gresty and Wistaston. The British Newspaper Archive web site provides access to searchable digitized archives of British and Irish newspapers. It was launched in November 2011. History The British Library Newspapers section was based in Colindale in north London, until 2013, and is now divided between the St Pancras and Boston Spa sites. The library has an almost complete collection of British and Irish newspapers since 1840. This is partly because of the legal deposit legislation of 1869, which required newspapers to supply a copy of each edition of a newspaper to the library. London editions of national daily and Sunday newspapers are complete back to 1801. In total, the collection consists of 660,000 bound volumes and 370,000 reels of microfilm containing tens of millions of newspapers with 52,000 titles on 45 km of shelves. The 1979 National League was contested as the second division/tier of Speedway in the United Kingdom. Summary The league was reduced from 20 teams to 19 from the previous season. White City Rebels closure saw their riders move to Eastbourne Eagles who moved up to the British League. Barrow Furness Flyers dropped out and Nottingham Outlaws joined the league. Teesside Tigers changed their name to Middlesbrough Tigers. Scunthorpe Saints changed their name to Scunthorpe Stags. Tom Owen of Newcastle topped the averages for the third consecutive year and Ian Gledhill, riding for Stoke won the Riders' Championship but both Newcastle and Stoke finished well behind Mildenhall Fen Tigers and Rye House Rockets in the league table.
