John Hubbard (actor)
John Hubbard (April 14, 1914 – November 6, 1988) was an American television and film actor. Career MGM changed Hubbard's professional name to Anthony Allen and cast him in modest feature films and short subjects for one year. In 1939, Hal Roach signed John Hubbard (under his given name) as one of five promising young actors with "star" potential (the other four were Lon Chaney, Jr., Victor Mature, Carole Landis, and William Bendix). Roach saw something in Hubbard, whose handsome features lent themselves to romantic roles while his dialogue skills allowed him to play farce comedy. He was showcased in ''The Housekeeper's Daughter'' (1939) and '' Turnabout'' (1940), but when Roach abandoned full-length features for shorter featurettes, Hubbard found roles elsewhere. ''Road Show'' is a 1941 American drama film directed by Hal Roach. Plot Business millionaire Drogo Gaines ( John Hubbard) is about to marry his fiancé Helen Newton (Polly Ann Young), but fakes a nervous breakdown before his own wedding because he has cold feet. He overhears Helen talk to her brother (Edward Norris) and mother (Florence Bates) about them losing Drogo's fortune if the wedding doesn't go through. This makes Drogo decide to call the wedding off entirely. Helen is furious and refuses to be dumped at the altar like this, attacking Drogo and trying to make it look like he is the one attacking her. Her brother Ed comes to her aid and knocks Drogo out. When Drogo wakes up again he is in a mental institution, and is considered insane and dangerous to others. Mary Brian (born Louise Byrdie Dantzler, February 17, 1906 – December 30, 2002) was an American actress who made the transition from silent films to sound films. Early life Brian was born in Corsicana, Texas, the daughter of Taurrence J. Dantzler and Louise B. Her brother was Taurrence J. Dantzler, Jr. Her father died when she was one month old and the family later moved to Dallas, Texas. In the early 1920s, they moved to Long Beach, California. She had intended becoming an illustrator but that was laid aside when at age 16 she was discovered in a local bathing beauty contest. One of the judges was actress Esther Ralston (who was to play her mother in the upcoming Peter Pan and who became a lifelong friend).
