John Hodgkinson (footballer, Born 1883)
John Chapman Hodgkinson (December 1883 – 5 June 1915) was an English professional footballer who played as a forward in the Football League for Stockport County and Grimsby Town. He was nicknamed "Cobbler". Personal life Hodgkinson served in the British Army as a territorial. He later re-enlisted as a private in the East Lancashire Regiment during the First World War. Hodgkinson served at Gallipoli and was killed in action during an Ottoman counterattack at the Third Battle of Krithia on 5 June 1915. He was originally reported as missing in action, but his status was changed to presumed dead soon after. Stockport
Stockport is a town and borough in Greater Manchester, England, south-east of Manchester, south-west of Ashton-under-Lyne and north of Macclesfield. The River Goyt and Tame merge to create the River Mersey here. Most of the town is within the boundaries of the historic county of Cheshire, with the area north of the Mersey in the historic county of Lancashire. Stockport in the 16th century was a small town entirely on the south bank of the Mersey, known for the cultivation of hemp and manufacture of rope. In the 18th century, it had one of the first mechanised silk factories in the British Isles. Stockport's predominant industries of the 19th century were the cotton and allied industries.
