John Henry Devitt
John Henry Devitt (February 1, 1851 – June 14, 1940) was an Ontario political figure. He represented Durham West in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1905 to 1919 as a Conservative member. Biography He was born in Cartwright Township, Canada West, the son of Thomas Devitt and Jane McKee. He was a member of the township council from 1882 to 1890, serving as reeve in 1896 and country warden in 1899. He married Elizabeth Watson on June 1, 1881. William Rickard (politician)
William Thomas Rickard, (10 February 1828 – 21 February 1905) was a British sailor and a recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Early life and Royal Navy William Thomas Rickard was born at Stoke Damerel, Devonport, on 10 February 1828, and at an early age joined the Royal Navy. Rickard was 27 years old, and a quartermaster in the Royal Navy during the Crimean War when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross. On 11 October 1855 in the Sea of Azov, Crimea, Quartermaster Rickard went with the commander ( John Edmund Commerell) of and a seaman to destroy large quantities of forage on the shore of the Sivash. Durham West was an electoral Riding (division), riding in Ontario, Canada. It was created in 1867 at the time of Canadian Confederation, confederation. Cartwright Township, Ontario
Scugog is a township in the Regional Municipality of Durham, south-central Ontario, Canada. It is northeast of Toronto and just north of Oshawa. The anchor and largest population base of the township is Port Perry. The township has a population of roughly 22,500. A smaller Scugog Township was also a historic municipality and geographic township prior to the amalgamation that formed the current municipality. History The original township of Scugog used to be divided between Reach and Cartwright townships in Ontario County and Northumberland and Durham County, respectively. When Lake Scugog was created by a dam in Lindsay in 1834, flooding created an island known as Scugog Island. The island was separated from Reach and Cartwright to form Scugog Township in 1856. In 1872 George Currie built a grain elevator which is currently Canada's oldest grain elevator. The new township was part of Ontario County. The Province of Canada (or the United Province of Canada or the United Canadas) was a British colony in North America from 1841 to 1867. Its formation reflected recommendations made by John Lambton, 1st Earl of Durham, in the Report on the Affairs of British North America following the Rebellions of 1837–1838.
