John Henry Chinner
John Henry Chinner (30 June 1865 – 15 December 1933) was a South Australian artist, best known for his caricatures of prominent people. History Chinner was born in Brighton, South Australia, son of George Williams Chinner (c. 1824 – 27 May 1880), and his second wife Mary Chinner, née Edwards. :Chinner, ''pḕre'', arrived in SA before 1847, had a drapery shop on Rundle Street. He married Caroline Bowen (c. 1831 – 29 April 1861) on 6 April 1849. By 1859 he was a Hindley Street publican, Mayor of Brighton in 1860 and longtime councillor. He married Mary Edwards on 8 September 1863. Brighton, South Australia
Brighton is a coastal suburb of Adelaide, South Australia, situated between Seacliff and Glenelg and aside Holdfast Bay. Some notable features of the area are the Brighton-Seacliff Yacht Club, the Brighton Surf Lifesaving Club, the Brighton Jetty, and a beach. The Windsor Theatre, constructed in 1925, is a long-standing institution. History The Kaurna people inhabited the area before British colonisation of South Australia. Witu-wattingga has become the accepted Kaurna name for the area, although its origin is probably arose through confusion with Wita-wattingga, the certified Kaurna name for an area around present-day Seacliff Park, meaning "in the midst of peppermint gums". Tom Bridges
Lieutenant General Sir George Tom Molesworth Bridges (20 August 1871 – 26 November 1939) known as Sir Tom Bridges, was a British Army officer and the 19th Governor of South Australia. Bridges had a distinguished military career, seeing service in Africa, India, South Africa, and most notably Europe during the First World War, where he was involved in the first British battle of the war at Mons, and later commanded the 19th (Western) Division during the Battle of the Somme in 1916 and then in the Battle of Passchendaele the following year. After the war, he served in Greece, Russia, the Balkans, and Asia Minor before becoming Governor of South Australia from 1922–27. Alfred Austin Lendon
Alfred Austin Lendon (c. 1877 – 29 June 1935) was a medical doctor, of whom it was said few practitioners have exerted a wider influence on medical science in South Australia. History Lendon was born in Kent and educated at Maidstone Grammar School, King's College, London, and University College, London, where he gained his MD. and MRCS. degrees, and arrived in South Australia in 1883. In 1884 he was, as a Government Medical Officer, sent to Bordertown to suppress an outbreak of smallpox, and was a member of the Medical Board from 1899 to 1932 and its president from 1912. In 1885 he was elected to the board of the Adelaide Children's Hospital, which at the time consisted only of the Way block, and was active in three major stages of expansion. Alexander Vigors Benson (1869 – 23 December 1939) was a medical doctor and sports enthusiast, for 24 years chairman of the Port Adelaide Racing Club and president of the Port Adelaide Football Club for 14. History Benson was born in Kensington, South Australia, a son of Dr. John Benson, who had a practice in Norwood, and educated at St Peter's College. He qualified in pharmacy at the University of Adelaide and from 1891 to 1896 served at the Mount Gambier Hospital as dispenser and assistant medical officer. Edward Daniel Alexander Bagot (25 December 1893 – 12 June 1968), generally known as "Alec" or "E. D. A. Bagot" was a South Australian adventurer, polemicist and politician active in the first half of the 20th century, and related to Captain Charles Hervey Bagot. Early life His father, the Rev. E(dward) Arthur Bagot ( – 19 January 1930) of Kildoon, County Kildare, and mother had arrived in Adelaide on ''Ormuz'' on 21 July 1891. Mrs Bagot had a daughter at 73 Hill Street, North Adelaide, and the son was born in Magill on Christmas Day, 1893. Albert James Hannan QC (27 July 1887 – 1 January 1965) was a lawyer who was Crown Solicitor for South Australia for 25 years . History He was born in Port Pirie, the eldest son of Francis Augustine "Frank" Hannan (1850 – 5 January 1931) and Mary Ellen Hannan (ca.1855 – 24 June 1934), and studied at the local school, then Sacred Heart College, Semaphore, followed by Adelaide University. After a brilliant scholastic career, winning the David Murray Scholarship in 1909 and 1912 and the Stow Prize in 1910 and 1912, he was awarded the LL.B. in 1912 and M.A. in 1914. Hannan joined the Education Department, and was admitted to the Bar in 1913, he became a permanent member of the Government service as Assistant then Parliamentary Draftsman before being appointed Assistant Crown Solicitor. Abraham Shannon (15 March 1869 – 24 October 1945) was a pastoralist in South Australia, a substantial donor to philanthropic and patriotic causes. Charles Bastard
Robert Charles Bastard (4 February 1863 – 6 November 1941) was an Australian swimming teacher who succeeded his father Thomas Barnabas Bastard as lessee of Adelaide's "City Baths". When the council upgraded the facility to include the city's only Olympic-size swimming pool, Bastard was retained as a supervisor. History Bastard's parents, Thomas Barnabas Bastard (died 10 September 1883) and Elizabeth Lucy Bastard (c 1821 – 23 August 1877) immigrated to South Australia by the ''William Stuart'' in 1852, and in later years would found the Old Colonists' Association.
