John Hayes (born 6 August 1939) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Fitzroy in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Football Fitzroy (VFL) A defender, Hayes came to Fitzroy from Warracknabeal. Hayes captained Fitzroy for most of the 1966 VFL season, replacing Ralph Rogerson, who retired five rounds into the year. On 6 July 1963, playing as first rover, he was a member of the young and inexperienced Fitzroy team that comprehensively and unexpectedly defeated Geelong, 9.13 (67) to 3.13 (31) in the 1963 Miracle Match. Fitzroy Football Club
The Fitzroy Football Club is an Australian rules football club currently competing in the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA). Formed in 1883 to represent the inner-Melbourne municipality of Fitzroy, the club was a member of the Victorian Football Association (VFA), before becoming a foundation member of the breakaway Victorian Football League (VFL/AFL) in 1897. Fitzroy won a total of eight VFL premierships, of which seven (1898, 1899, 1904, 1905, 1913, 1916 and 1922) were won whilst they were nicknamed the Maroons and one (1944) as the Gorillas. The decision of the club to change its nickname to the Lions in 1957 coincided with what history now records as the beginning of decades of poor on-field performance and financial losses that eventually resulted in the club being placed into administration, ultimately leaving the AFL at the end of the 1996 season. Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. The 1966 VFL season was the 70th season of the Victorian Football League (VFL), the highest level senior Australian rules football competition in Victoria. The season featured twelve clubs, ran from 23 April until 24 September, and comprised an 18-game home-and-away season followed by a finals series featuring the top four clubs. The premiership was won by the St Kilda Football Club, after it defeated by one point in the VFL Grand Final. Ralph Rogerson
Ralph Rogerson (born 24 February 1937) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Fitzroy Football Club, Fitzroy in the Australian Football League, Victorian Football League (VFL) during the 1960s. Rogerson started his career in the South Australian National Football League, where he played with North Adelaide Football Club, North Adelaide. A key position forward, he represented South Australia at the 1958 Melbourne Carnival. He then ventured to Western Australia and joined East Perth Football Club, East Perth and appeared in their losing 1961 West Australian National Football League Grand Final team. His VFL stint began in 1964 and he took part in each of Fitzroy's 18 games that season, all of which they lost. He kicked 27 goals for the year, which was enough to top the Fitzroy goal-kicking.
