John Grey (MP For Bridgnorth)
John Grey (''c.'' 1724 – 25 February 1777) was a British politician, the younger son of Harry Grey, 3rd Earl of Stamford. He was the Clerk of the Green Cloth from 1754 until his death, and at the 1754 general election he was elected unopposed ''The Parliaments of England'' by Henry Stooks Smith (1st edition published in three volumes 1844–50), second edition edited (in one volume) by F. W. S. Craig (Political Reference Publications 1973), p.272 as one of the two Members of Parliament (MPs) for Bridgnorth in Shropshire. He was re-elected unopposed in 1761, and stood down in 1768 to be elected at Tregony instead. Harry Grey, 3rd Earl of Stamford (10 June 1685 – 16 November 1739), was an English peer. He was somewhat eccentric, displaying this mainly in the construction of whimsical buildings. Life Harry Grey was born the eldest son of John Grey, who was the third son of Henry Grey, 1st Earl of Stamford. His mother was Catherine Ward, the daughter of Edward Ward, 7th Baron Dudley. He married, on 6 July 1704, Dorothy Wright, the daughter of Nathan Wright, and had seven children by her: *Lady Dorothy Grey (15 September 1706 - 19 July 1781) *Lady Catherine Grey (Bradgate House, 11 November 1711 – Velsen, 11 Apr 1748), who studied in Leiden. George Pigot, 1st Baron Pigot
George Pigot, 1st Baron Pigot (4 March 1719 – 11 May 1777) was twice the British President of the British East India Company. Life Pigot was the eldest son of Richard Pigot of Westminster, by his wife Frances, daughter of Peter Goode, a Huguenot who had come to England in the late seventeenth century. Frances was a "" to Queen Caroline. His brothers were Admiral Hugh Pigot (1722–1792) and Sir Robert. Pigot entered the service of the East India Company in 1736, at the age of 17; after nineteen years he became governor and commander-in-chief of Madras in 1755. Having defended the city against the French in 1758-1759 and occupied Pondichéry on behalf of the company, he resigned his office in November 1763 and returned to the Kingdom of Great Britain, being made a baronet in 1764. Sir Alexander Leith, 1st Baronet (created 1775)
Sir Alexander Charles George Leith, 1st Baronet (1741–1780) was a British soldier and politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1774 and 1780. Leith was the son of Alexander Leith and his wife Anne who was the widow of John Milet of County Antrim. His father was killed at the siege of Havana in 1762. Leith joined the Royal Artillery and was lieutenant and fireworker in 1759. In 1764 he became first lieutenant. He joined the service of the East India Company in 1768. He married firstly Margaret Wren, a widow and daughter of Thomas Hay of Huntington. He married secondly a daughter of General Sir John Cope on 1 March 1775. At the 1774 general election Leith was returned unopposed as Member of Parliament for Tregony which was in the gift of the Treasury. He was a candidate at the last minute and was not one of the names that Lord North had put forward for the seat. George Lane Parker
George Lane Parker (1724–1791) was a British Army officer and politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1769 and 1780. Early life Parker was born on 6 September 1724, the second son of George Parker, 2nd Earl of Macclesfield and his first wife Mary Lane, daughter of Ralph Lane of Woodbury. He matriculated at Hertford College, Oxford on 20 January 1741 and graduated BA in 1743 and MA in 1750. Military career Parker joined the army in the 1st Foot Guards and was lieutenant and captain in 1749 and captain and lieutenant-colonel in 1755. He became Colonel in 1762 and Major-general in 1770. From 1773 to 1782 he was Colonel of the 20th Foot. He became a Lieutenant-General in 1777 and was Colonel of the 12th Dragoons from 1782. Political career Parker stood at Guildford in 1761 but was defeated. Thomas Pownall
Thomas Pownall (bapt. 4 September 1722 N.S. – 25 February 1805) was a British colonial official and politician. He was governor of the Province of Massachusetts Bay from 1757 to 1760, and afterwards sat in the House of Commons from 1767 to 1780. He travelled widely in the North American colonies prior to the American Revolutionary War, opposed Parliamentary attempts to tax the colonies, and was a minority advocate of colonial positions until the Revolution. Classically educated and well-connected to the colonial administration in London, Pownall first travelled to North America in 1753. He spent two years exploring the colonies before being appointed Lieutenant Governor of New Jersey in 1755. He became governor of Massachusetts in 1757 after helping engineer the recall of longtime Governor William Shirley.
