John F Feehan Stakes
The John F. Feehan Stakes is a Moonee Valley Racing Club Group 2 Australian Thoroughbred horse race held under Weight for Age conditions, for horses aged three years old and upwards, over a distance of 1600 meters at Moonee Valley Racecourse in September. The prize money is A$500,000. History The original race was named after John F. Feehan, who was the landowner of where the Moonee Valley Racecourse is located now. Rising Fast (NZ)
Rising Fast (1949 - 1978) was a champion New Zealand-bred Thoroughbred racehorse who is the only horse to complete the Spring Grand Slam, winning the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup, and Cox Plate in 1954. He also won the 1955 Caulfield Cup and came second in the 1955 Melbourne Cup. Breeding Rising Fast was bred by brothers Frank and Bruce Robertson at their Platform Lodge farm at Greytown (New Zealand), Greytown in the Wairarapa. He was a bay or brown gelding by Alonzo (GB) and from the mare Faster, by Mr. Standfast. Alonzo was a poorly performed racehorse having only won one race on the flat and one over the hurdles in England. Faster was unplaced at her only two starts, but produced seven winners from ten foals. Rising Fast was purchased at the 1950 New Zealand National Sales for 325 guineas by first time racehorse owner, Leicester R. El Segundo (horse)
El Segundo (foaled 11 September 2001 in New Zealand) is a retired Thoroughbred racehorse. He is a bay son of Pins from the mare Palos Verdes by Flying Spur. Foaled in 2001 at Ancroft Stud, Matamata, New Zealand he was sold as a yearling for $140,000 and has spent his entire racing career in Australia under the care of trainer Colin Little. Amongst his major wins are the 2007 W. S. Cox Plate, 2007 MRC C F Orr Stakes, 2006 MRC Underwood Stakes and the 2005 Yalumba Stakes. Aided by his victory in the W. S. Cox Plate, El Segundo was recognised with an IHFA handicappers rating of 122, placing him equal 18th in the world top 50 on assessed performances from 1 June to 25 November 2007. Strawberry Road (28 September 1979 – 1 June 1995) was a champion Australian Thoroughbred racehorse who went on to race in Germany, France, the United States, and Japan. Bred in New South Wales, he was by the 'superbly-bred' Whiskey Road (Nijinsky- Bowl of Flowers) out of Giftisa (by Rich Gift - a grandson of Nasrullah and Abernant). Racing career In Australia Trained by Doug Bougoure, Strawberry Road had two starts late in his two-year-old season before making a winning start to the new season on 11 August 1982, in the Queensland Maiden Handicap at Eagle Farm. Rubiton
Rubiton (18 October 1983 – 25 November 2005) was a champion Australian Thoroughbred racehorse of the mid-1980s. He was bred by the Oamaru Stud in Victoria. Rubiton's name was a combination of "Ruby" and "ton", a colloquial term for 100 runs in cricket. Racing career Rubiton started off solely as a sprinter winning the 1,400-metre weight for age Futurity Stakes and coming third in the Newmarket Handicap and Oakleigh Plate to sprinters Placid Ark and Special. In his four-year-old season, he won his first four starts, dominating at weight for age in the Manikato, Memsie, Feehan and Underwood Stakes. He was then defeated by Drought and Fair Sir in the Caulfield Stakes after overexerting himself in trackwork. Naturalism (19 October 1988 – 13 July 2018) was a New Zealand-bred Australian-trained thoroughbred racehorse. Background Foaled in New Zealand on 19 October 1988, Naturalism was a bay stallion sired by Palace Music, a Kentucky-bred, French-trained racehorse who won the Champion Stakes in 1984. At stud, Palace Music (Naturalism's sire) was best known as the sire of the American champion Cigar. Naturalism was purchased as a yearling for A$35,000 by Anthony Freedman. Sunline (29 September 1995 – 1 May 2009) was a champion New Zealand-bred Thoroughbred racehorse who was the world's highest earning race mare of her time. She won 32 of her 48 races with earnings of NZ$14,200,000. She was named the New Zealand Horse of the Year four times and Australian Horse of the Year three times. She has won the most Group races in modern times with 27, and she previously held the New Zealand record of 13 Group One wins until Melody Belle surpassed her in 2021. Sunline led in most of her races, and sometimes settled just behind the leader; she was difficult to pass. She loved to win and was known for her fiery temperament. Northerly (17 October 1996 – 9 May 2012) was an Australian racehorse who is considered arguably Australia's best middle distance Thoroughbred horse of the early 2000s. Northerly, trained by Western Australian harness racing legend Fred Kersley, won nine Group One (G1) races, including the Australian Cup twice, and the Cox Plate, regarded as the Weight for Age championship of Australasia, also on two occasions.
