John Dutton, 2nd Baron Sherborne
John Baron Dutton, 2nd Baron Sherborne (24 January 1779 – 18 October 1862), was a British peer. Background Sherborne was the son of James Dutton, 1st Baron Sherborne, of Sherborne, Gloucestershire, by his wife Elizabeth Coke (1753–1824), daughter of Wenman Coke and Elizabeth Chamberlayne. According to the '' Legacies of British Slave-Ownership'' at the University College London, Dutton was awarded a payment as a slave trader in the aftermath of the Slavery Abolition Act 1833 with the Slave Compensation Act 1837. The British Government took out a £15 million loan (worth £ in ) with interest from Nathan Mayer Rothschild and Moses Montefiore which was subsequently paid off by the British taxpayers (ending in 2015). Dutton was associated with "T71/854 St John No. 64A", he owned 464 slaves in Jamaica and received a £3,579 payment at the time (worth £ in ). James Henry Legge Dutton, 3rd Baron Sherborne (30 May 1804 – 8 March 1883), was a British peer. Baron Sherborne
Lord Sherborne, Baron of Sherborne, in the County of Gloucester, was a title in the Peerage of Great Britain. It was created in 1784 for James Dutton, who had earlier represented Gloucestershire in Parliament. He was the son of James Dutton (originally James Naper) by Anne Dutton, daughter of Sir Ralph Dutton, 1st Baronet (see Dutton baronets). His father had assumed the surname of Dutton in lieu of his patronymic on succeeding to the Dutton estates in 1743. The title became extinct upon the death of the eighth Baron in 1985. General William Rose Mansfield, 1st Baron Sandhurst (21 June 1819 – 23 June 1876) was a British military commander who served as Commander-in-Chief of India from 1865 to 1870. The Hon. Ralph Heneage Dutton (5 August 1821 – 8 October 1892), was a British Conservative politician. Background Dutton was the third and youngest son of John Dutton, 2nd Baron Sherborne, by his marriage to the Hon. Mary Legge, only child and heiress of Henry Bilson-Legge, 2nd Baron Stawell. Political career Dutton was elected Member of Parliament for Hampshire South in 1857, a seat he held until 1865, and then represented Cirencester until 1868. The title Baron of Dunsany or, more commonly, Lord Dunsany, is one of the oldest dignities in the Peerage of Ireland, one of just a handful of 13th- to 15th-century titles still extant, having had 21 holders, of the Plunkett name, to date. Ralph Stawell Dutton, 8th Baron Sherborne (1898–1985), was the 8th and last Baron Sherborne. He created the gardens at Hinton Ampner near Alresford in Hampshire, England, and on his death left the house and garden to the National Trust. It is now open to the public. Early life Ralph Dutton was born on 25 August 1898. Ralph Dutton was the only son of Henry John Dutton (1847–1935) and Eleanor Cave (1866-1946), the third of four children, with two elder sisters and one younger sister. He attended West Downs, a Preparatory School near Winchester, before studying at Eton College. Thomas Howard, 16th Earl of Suffolk, 9th Earl of Berkshire FSA (18 August 1776 – 4 December 1851) was a British peer and politician. Background Suffolk was the second but eldest surviving son of General John Howard, 15th Earl of Suffolk, and Julia, daughter of John Gaskarth of Hutton Hall, Penrith, Cumberland. He gained the courtesy title Viscount Andover on the death of his elder brother, Charles Nevinson, who was killed by the accidental discharge of his fowling piece in 1800. Political career Suffolk was Member of Parliament for Arundel from 1802 to 1806. He was appointed Major-Commandant of the Malmesbury Volunteers by commission dated 15 Dec. 1803.
