John Duke (police Officer)
John Duke (20 October 1926 – 26 February 1989) was a senior British police officer who rose through the ranks to be Chief Constable of Hampshire Constabulary. Life He was born in Newcastle-on-Tyne in the north-east of England and worked in the coal mines before going to London in 1947 to join the City of London Police. After 22 years with that force he transferred to Essex Constabulary as an Assistant Chief Constable, being promoted to Deputy Chief Constable there in 1972. On 1 September 1977 he was appointed Chief Constable of Hampshire, where he oversaw the introduction of many changes, not least the introduction of the Air Support Unit and modern communication and training centres. He retired from the force in 1988. Essex Police is a territorial police force responsible for policing the county of Essex, in the East of England. Queen's Police Medal
The King's Police Medal (KPM) is awarded to police in the United Kingdom for gallantry or distinguished service. It was also formerly awarded within the wider British Empire, including Commonwealth of Nations, Commonwealth countries, most of which now have their own honours systems. The medal was established on 7 July 1909 as the King's Police Medal (KPM), initially inspired by the need to recognise the gallantry of the police officers involved in the Tottenham Outrage. Renamed the King's Police and Fire Services Medal (KPFSM) in 1940, it was replaced on 19 May 1954 by the Queen's Police Medal (QPM), when a separate Queen's Fire Service Medal was also instituted. The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service. John Hoddinott
Sir John Charles Hoddinott (21 September 1944 – 13 August 2001) was a senior British police officer who rose through the ranks to become Chief Constable of Hampshire Constabulary. He was born in Winchester, Hampshire and educated at Barton Peveril Grammar School in Eastleigh. Both his father and grandfather had served in the Hampshire Constabulary. Hoddinott however joined the Metropolitan Police as a cadet in 1961, becoming a constable in 1963, a sergeant in 1967 and an Inspector in 1969. In the latter year he attended Trinity College, Cambridge, and was awarded a degree in Law and Economics in 1972. After returning to duty with the Metropolitan Police he was transferred to the Obscene Publications squad as a Chief Inspector and then to the Drug Quad as a Detective Superintendent. In 1981 he was put in charge of the CID at West End Central and promoted to Chief Superintendent.
