John Cor
John Cor is the name of the friar referred to in the first known written reference to a batch of Scotch Whisky on 1 June 1495. The Latin entry in the Exchequer Rolls can be translated as: :"To Brother John Cor, by order of the King, to make ''aqua vitae'' VIII bolls of malt." Friar John Cor has been identified as a Dominican Friar in the Stirling house https://brill.com/view/title/8182 but also a less secure suggestion has been made that he might be John Kawe who was a Tironensian monk based at Lindores Abbey in Fife. However in Scots Cor would have had a rolled ‘r’ and is unlikely to be confused as or written as ‘Kawe’. He was a servant at the court of James IV. The King gave him a gift of 14 shillings on Christmas Day in 1488, and at Christmas time in 1494 Cor was given black cloth from Lille in Flanders for his livery clothes as a clerk in royal service. James IV Of Scotland
James IV (17 March 1473 – 9 September 1513) was King of Scotland from 11 June 1488 until his death at the Battle of Flodden in 1513. Malt
Malt is germinated cereal grain that has been dried in a process known as " malting". The grain is made to germinate by soaking in water and is then halted from germinating further by drying with hot air. The Tironensian Order or the Order of Tiron was a medieval monastic order named after the location of the mother abbey (Tiron Abbey, french: Abbaye de la Sainte-Trinité de Tiron, established in 1109) in the woods of Thiron-Gardais (sometimes ''Tiron'') in Perche, some 35 miles west of Chartres in France). Lindores Abbey
Lindores Abbey was a Tironensian abbey on the outskirts of Newburgh, Fife, Newburgh in Fife, Scotland. Now a reduced ruin, it lies on the southern banks of the River Tay, about north of the village of Lindores and is a scheduled ancient monument. The abbey was founded as a daughter house of Kelso Abbey in 1191 (some sources say 1178), by David, Earl of Huntingdon, on land granted to him by his brother William the Lion. The first abbot was Guido, Prior of Kelso, under whom the buildings were mostly completed. The church, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin and St. Andrew, was long, with transepts long. William Foular (apothecary)
William Foular was a Scottish apothecary who served the Scottish court. Career Foular supplied medicines and cures to James IV of Scotland and his wife Margaret Tudor. Payments were recorded in the royal treasurer's accounts. A copy of a household roll of the Scottish court made around 1507 names him and John Mosman as the court "pottingaris". "Pottingar" is an old Scots language word for apothecary. Foular was based in Edinburgh, and a burgess of the town. He seems to have sold books, missals, and offertory candles to the king, although similar books were also provided by a man called by "John Foular". From January 1500 Foular had a royal pension of 20 merks paid from the customs of Edinburgh, and was exempted from the burdens of civic duties.
