John Coates (cricketer)
John Wind Coates, Jr. (christened 26 February 1828 – 7 July 1870) was an English people, English first-class cricketer. The son of John Wind Coates senior, he was born in February 1828 at Stokesley, Stokesley, Yorkshire. He served in the North York Rifle Regiment of Militia, being Officer (armed forces)#United Kingdom, commissioned with the rank of Lieutenant (British Army and Royal Marines), lieutenant. He was promoted to the rank of Captain (British Army and Royal Marines), captain in September 1854, before being promoted to the rank of second Major (United Kingdom), major in June 1859. Coates made a single appearance in first-class cricket for a combined Durham and Yorkshire cricket team against Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club, Nottinghamshire at Portrack Lane, Stockton-on-Tees in 1858. Stokesley
Stokesley is a market town and civil parish in the Hambleton District of North Yorkshire, England, formerly a part of the historic North Riding of Yorkshire. It lies on the River Leven. An electoral ward, of the same name, stretches north to Newby and had a population at the 2011 Census of 5,537. Stokesley is about two miles south of the Middlesbrough borough boundary and eight miles south of Middlesbrough town centre. Stokesley is between Middlesbrough, Guisborough and Northallerton in a farming area. First-class Cricket
First-class cricket, along with List A cricket and Twenty20 cricket, is one of the highest-standard forms of cricket. A first-class match is one of three or more days' scheduled duration between two sides of eleven players each and is officially adjudged to be worthy of the status by virtue of the standard of the competing teams. Matches must allow for the teams to play two innings each, although in practice a team might play only one innings or none at all. The etymology of "first-class cricket" is unknown, but it was used loosely before it acquired official status in 1895, following a meeting of leading English clubs. Cris Tinley
Robert Crispin Tinley (25 October 1830 – 11 December 1900) was an English first-class cricketer in the mid-19th century who was recognised as one of the best slow bowlers of his time. Tinley was born at Southwell, Nottinghamshire, and played for Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club and the All-England Eleven. He batted right-handed and was a right-arm slow bowler of underarm lobs. Tinley made his first-class debut in the 1847 season and made 117 appearances between then and the 1874 season. He took 309 wickets at an average of 14.46 with a best analysis of 8 for 12 (in a match in which he also took 7 for 66 in the second innings). He took 10 wickets in a match on five occasions. He was a useful tail-end batsman who made three fifties with a highest score of 56. He scored 2004 runs in all at an average of 11.38. Portrack Lane
Portrack Lane was a cricket ground in Stockton-on-Tees, Durham. The first recorded match on the ground was in 1839, when Stockton played an All-England Eleven. The ground also hosted two first-class matches, the first of which was in 1858 when a combined Yorkshire and Durham team played Nottinghamshire. The second and final first-class match to be played on the ground came in 1861, when Yorkshire with Stockton-on-Tees played Cambridgeshire. The final recorded match on the ground saw Stockton play a United South of England Eleven. Shortly after this the ground ceased to be used for cricket matches. The ground was located at the far western end of Portrack Lane. By 1899, an iron works had been built on the ground, with the site today is occupied by an industrial estate and a gas holder.
