John Charles Cawood
John Charles Cawood (1872–12 June 1962) was an Australian administrator who served as Government Resident of Central Australia during the territory's brief existence as a separate jurisdiction from the Northern Territory. The seat of power was Alice Springs, then known as Stuart Town. Cawood had a background as a forester and sawmiller. He had served as president of the Bellingen Shire Council in New South Wales and was also a coroner and magistrate. Cawood was the first person to hold this office, serving from 1926 till 1929. Central Australia was a territory of Australia that existed from 1927 to 1931. It was formed from the split of the Northern Territory in 1927 alongside the territory of North Australia (territory), North Australia; the dividing line between the two was 20 degrees south latitude. The two territories were merged in 1931 to reform the Northern Territory. Central Australia's seat was in Stuart, which was known commonly, and has been officially since 1933, as Alice Springs. Coniston Massacre
The Coniston massacre, which took place in the region around the Coniston cattle station in the then Territory of Central Australia (now the Northern Territory) from 14 August to 18 October 1928, was the last known officially sanctioned massacre of Indigenous Australians and one of the last events of the Australian Frontier Wars. In a series of punitive expeditions led by Northern Territory Police constable William George Murray, people of the Warlpiri, Anmatyerre, and Kaytetye groups were killed. The massacre occurred in response to the murder of dingo hunter Frederick Brooks, killed by Aboriginal people in August 1928 at a place called ''Yukurru'', also known as Brooks Soak.
