Stratford is a city on the Avon River within Perth County in southwestern Ontario, Canada, with a 2016 population of 31,465 in a land area of . Stratford is the seat of Perth County, which was settled by English, Irish, Scottish and German immigrants, in almost equal numbers, starting in the 1820s but primarily in the 1830s and 1840s. Most became farmers; even today, the area around Stratford is known for mixed farming, dairying and hog production. The area was settled in 1832, and the town and river were named after Stratford-upon-Avon, England. Stratford was incorporated as a town in 1859 and as a city in 1886. The first mayor was John Corry Wilson Daly and the current mayor is Dan Mathieson. The swan has become a symbol of the city. Each year twenty-four white swans are released into the Avon River. Andrew Monteith
Andrew Monteith (August 15, 1823 – February 1, 1896) was a Canadian businessman and political figure in Ontario. He represented Perth North in the Parliament of Ontario from 1867 to 1874 and in the House of Commons of Canada as a Conservative member for Perth North from 1874 to 1878. He was born in County Tyrone, Ireland in 1823, the son of John Monteith, and came to Downie Township in Perth County, Upper Canada with his family in 1834. For a time, he worked with his brother who owned a store in Stratford. He served on the county council from 1850 to 1865 and on the town council for Stratford from 1857 to 1861. Monteith married Jane Dunsmore in 1850. He was elected to the 1st Parliament of Ontario in 1867; in 1874, he was elected to the House of Commons. He resigned from politics in 1878. Perth North was a federal electoral district represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1867 to 1935. It was located in the province of Ontario. It was created by the British North America Act of 1867 which divided the County of Perth into two ridings. The North Riding of the County of Perth consisted of the Townships of Wallace, Elma, Logan, Ellice, Mornington, and North Easthope, and the Town of Stratford. In 1882, it was redefined to consist of the townships of Ellice, Elma, Mornington and Logan, the towns of Stratford and Listowel, and the village of Milverton. In 1903, it was redefined to include the township of Easthope North. In 1914, it was redefined to include the township of Wallace, and exclude the township of Logan.
