John Brewer (bishop)
Bishop John Brewer (24 November 1929–10 June 2000) was the fourth Roman Catholic Bishop of Lancaster, England. He was ordained a priest in the Diocese of Shrewsbury, where he became Auxiliary Bishop on 28 July 1971. Brewer became Coadjutor Bishop of Lancaster on 15 November 1983 and, upon the retirement of Brian Charles Foley, he became Bishop of Lancaster on 22 May 1985. The Wolfson History Prizes are literary awards given annually in the United Kingdom to promote and encourage standards of excellence in the writing of history for the general public. Prizes are given annually for two or three exceptional works published during the year, with an occasional oeuvre prize (a general award for an individual's distinguished contribution to the writing of history). They are awarded and administered by the Wolfson Foundation, with winning books being chosen by a panel of judges composed of eminent historians. In order to qualify for consideration, a book must be published in the United Kingdom and the author must be a British subject at the time the award is made and normally resident in the UK. Books should be readable and scholarly and be accessible to the lay reader. Johnny Brewer
Johnny Lee Brewer (March 8, 1937 – May 27, 2011) was an American football tight end and linebacker in the NFL for the Cleveland Browns and New Orleans Saints. He played college football at the University of Mississippi. Brewer was a fourth round selection by the Cleveland Browns in the 1960 NFL Draft, and was also selected by the Minneapolis AFL teamof the newly-formed American Football League. The Browns also selected Ole Miss teammates Bobby Franklin in the eleventh round and Robert Khayat in the sixth round. He was a member of the Browns teams that won the NFL championship in 1964 over the heavily favored Baltimore Colts and the 1965 Eastern Conference championship team that lost the title game to the Green Bay Packers. John Sherren Brewer
John Sherren Brewer, Jr. (March 1809 – February 1879) was an English clergyman, historian and scholar. He was a brother of E. Cobham Brewer, compiler of ''Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase & Fable''. Birth and education Brewer was born in Norwich, the son of a Baptist schoolmaster. He matriculated at Queen's College, Oxford in 1827, graduating B.A. in 1833, M.A. 1835.. He was ordained in the Church of England in 1837, and became chaplain to a central London workhouse. In 1839 he was appointed lecturer in classical literature at King's College London, and in 1858 he became professor of English language and literature and lecturer in modern history, succeeding FD Maurice. In 1854, Maurice invited him to teach at the newly opened Working Men's College; from 1869 to 1872 he was the College's Vice Principal. John David Brewer HDSSc, MRIA, FRSE, FAcSS, FRSA (born 1951) is an Irish-British sociologist who was the former President of the British Sociological Association (2009–12), and has been the Professor of Post Conflict Studies in the Senator George J. Mitchell Institute for Global Peace, Security and Justice at Queen's University Belfast (2013–present), Honorary Professor Extraordinary, Stellenbosch University (2017–present) and Honorary Professor of Sociology, Warwick University (2021–present). New Romney (UK Parliament Constituency)
New Romney was a parliamentary constituency in Kent, which elected two Members of Parliament (MPs) to the House of Commons from 1371 until 1832, when it was abolished by the Great Reform Act. New Romney was a Cinque Port, which made it technically of different status from a parliamentary borough, but the difference was purely a nominal one. The constituency consisted of the town of New Romney; it had once been a flourishing port but by the 19th century the harbour had been destroyed and there was no maritime trade, the main economic activity being grazing cattle on Romney Marsh. In 1831, the population of the constituency was 978, and the town contained 165 houses. The right to vote was reserved to the Mayor and Common Council of the town; however, many of these were customs or excise officers, who were disqualified from voting by a change in the law in 1782, so that in the early 19th century there were only 8 voters. John Brewer, D.D. (1744–1822), was an English Benedictine monk. Brewer, who assumed in religion the Christian name of Bede, was born in 1744. In 1776 he was appointed to the mission at Bath. He built a new chapel in St. James's Parade in that city, and it was to have been opened on 11 June 1780, but the delegates from Lord George Gordon's 'No Popery' association so inflamed the fanaticism of the mob that on 9 June the edifice was demolished, as well as the presbytery in Bell-tree Lane. The registers, diocesan archives, and Bishop Walmesley's library and manuscripts perished in the flames; and Dr. Brewer had a narrow escape from the fury of the rioters. The ringleader was tried and executed, and Dr. Brewer recovered 3,736l. damages from the hundred of Bath. In 1781 the duties of president of his brethren called Dr. Brewer away from Bath. John Brewer (May 14, 1800 – June 2, 1870) was an American farmer and politician who served in the first session of the Michigan House of Representatives after adoption of the state constitution. Biography John Brewer was born on May 14, 1800.: His date of death is June 2, 1870, and his age is given as 70 years, 19 days. In September 1825, he and his brother Abram were among the first settlers in the area of Superior Township, Michigan, known as the Free Church neighborhood. Abram died soon after their arrival. John Brewer purchased of land in the area in April 1826, another 160 acres by 1840, and a third 160-acre tract by 1856. Brewer served as a delegate to the state constitutional convention in 1835, and was elected to the first session of the Michigan House of Representatives following the constitution's approval.
