John Bennett (Canadian Politician)
John Bennett (1832–1912) was an Ontario farmer and political figure. He represented Stormont in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario as a Liberal- Patrons of Industry member from 1894 to 1898. He was born in Saint-Polycarpe, Lower Canada in 1832, the son of Thomas H. Bennett who served in the Legislative Council of the Province of Canada, and came to Roxborough Township in Upper Canada with his parents while still young. Bennett served as reeve for Roxborough and was warden for Stormont County in 1893. Patrons Of Industry
The Patrons of Industry in Canada were based on the Patrons of Industry of Michigan that had formed in 1889. It was dedicated to upholding and encouraging the moral, social, intellectual, political and financial situation of farmers and to preserve the way of life that existed in farming communities in the late nineteenth century against encroaching industrialization. It cooperated with the urban labour movement to address the political frustrations of both groups with big business. The Patrons' first appearance in Canada was The Grand Association of the Patrons of Industry in Ontario, founded in 1890. It declared itself independent of the U.S. group in 1891. Although centred in Ontario, the organization branched out into Manitoba (see Patrons of Industry in Manitoba), Alberta, Quebec and the Maritime provinces. Stormont County, Ontario
Stormont County area is a county in the Canadian province of Ontario. Stormont was created in 1792, but was settled seven years earlier in 1785. Veterans of Loyalist regiments were among the first settlers. An estimated one third of the pioneers in the county were Highlander, one third German and the rest English, Irish and Lowland Scots people. The original territory of Stormont also included Russell County, which became a separate county in 1800. William Mack (Ontario Politician)
William Mack (February 29, 1828 – December 11, 1897) was an Ontario businessman and political figure. He represented Cornwall from 1879 to 1883, Cornwall and Stormont from 1886 to 1890 and Stormont from 1890 to 1894 in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario as a Liberal member. He was born in Lanarkshire, Scotland in 1828, the son of Robert Mack, and was brought to Huntingdon County, Lower Canada, by his parents during his first year of life. He grew up there and moved to Cornwall, Canada West in 1849, where he managed a gristmill. In 1855, he married Agnes Henderson. Mack went into business on his own, also helping to establish paper, cotton and woollen mills at Cornwall.
