John Beddoes School
John Beddoes School was a secondary or comprehensive school for boys and girls. The school was based on one site in the town of Presteigne. It had a largely rural catchment area in east Radnorshire including the towns and villages of Presteigne, Knighton, Beguildy, New Radnor, Knucklas, Gladestry, Whitton and Norton. It was situated 1/2 mile away from the Welsh/English border and also educated pupils from Herefordshire and Shropshire. During 2013 the school was placed in Estyn's Special Measures category. With the support of Newtown High School the school underwent numerous changes, however under Powys County Council plans, approved by Welsh Government, John Beddoes High School closed on 10 April 2014 to be reopened as a campus of Newtown High School on 11 April 2014. Presteigne
Presteigne (; cy, Llanandras: the church of St. Andrew) is a town and community in Radnorshire, Powys, Wales on the south bank of the River Lugg. Formerly the county town of the historic county of Radnorshire, the town has, in common with several other towns close to the Wales-England border, assumed the motto, "''Gateway to Wales''". The border wraps around three sides of the town (north, east and south). Newtown High School is a secondary comprehensive school for boys and girls. The school is based on two campuses in the towns of Newtown and Presteigne in Powys. It caters for pupils aged 11 – 18 years (KS3 and KS4). History In the 1950s, Montgomeryshire County Council, with their architect Herbert Carr and successive Directors of Education, T Glyn Davies and J A Davies, set about erecting new school buildings across the county. After the 1944 Education Act Newtown had three secondary schools: a Grammar School, in the former County Intermediate School opposite the railway station; a Secondary Modern School which had taken over much of Penygloddfa Primary School, and a County Technical School which had moved from old buildings in Penygloddfa into the army huts along Dolfor Road. Chaz Davies
Chaz Davies (born 10 February 1987 in Knighton, Powys, Wales), is a former motorcycle racer who announced his retirement from competition in September 2021. For 2022, Davies is to become a rider-coach working with Ducati and Feel Racing, mentoring Alvaro Bautista and Michael Ruben Rinaldi in World Superbikes and Nicolo Bulega in Ducati's inaugural World Supersport season, riding the Panigale V-twin. He was the 2011 World Supersport champion and also the 2011 BBC Wales Sports Personality of the Year. Rob Weale
Robert Arthur Weale (born in Hereford on 3 April 1963), is a Welsh international lawn and indoor bowls player. Weale is originally from Presteigne and was educated at John Beddoes School, but now lives in Hereford. In 2022, he was inducted into the Welsh Sports Hall of fame. Bowls career Weale made his international debut in 1982. He was the youngest competitor in the 1984 World Outdoor Bowls Championship in Aberdeen, where he competed in the triples event. World Titles Weale's career-best performance came in January 2000, when he won the 2000 World Indoor Bowls Championship singles title at Potters. Just a few months later, Weale won the men's fours title at the 2000 World Outdoor Bowls Championship, in April 2000. A secondary modern school is a type of secondary school that existed throughout England, Wales and Northern Ireland from 1944 until the 1970s under the Tripartite System. Schools of this type continue in Northern Ireland, where they are usually referred to as ''secondary schools'', and in areas of England, such as Buckinghamshire (where they are referred to as ''community schools''), Lincolnshire and Wirral, (where they are called ''high schools''). Secondary modern schools were designed for the majority of pupils between 11 and 15; those who achieved the highest scores in the 11-plus were allowed to go to a selective grammar school which offered education beyond 15.
