John Bear (educator)
John Bjorn Bear is an American businessman in the distance education industry. He is also a writer of creative reference works. Early life and education Bear attended Reed College in Oregon (class of 1959), and holds bachelor's and master's degrees from University of California, Berkeley (1959 and 1960, respectively) and a doctorate from Michigan State University (1966). Career He is the author of ''Bears' Guide to Earning Degrees by Distance Learning,'' whose 16th edition was published in 2006. He is also co-author of the first two editions (of five total) of the book now called ''Walston's Guide to Christian Distance Learning''. He has been engaged by the FBI in its investigations of diploma mills for some twenty years. In the past, Bear was involved with several unaccredited start-up distance learning institutions, including Columbia Pacific University, Fairfax University, and Greenwich University. John Norman Bear (8 August 1944 – 17 March 2007) was a Canadian professional snooker player. Career Born in Kinistino, Saskatchewan in 1944, Bear spent much of his childhood was spent in Flin Flon where he learned how to play pool as a child and became a hustler. In 1979, he turned professional, entering his first tournament at the 1979 Canadian Open, where he beat Bernie Mikkelsen 5–3 before losing in the second round 7–9 to the young Englishman Joe Johnson. He beat Mikkelsen again in the Canadian Professional Championship of that year by 9 frames to 4, having at one stage led 7–0, but lost his semi-final match 3–9 to Cliff Thorburn. Bear's first attempt at the World Championship resulted in a 5–9 loss in the last 48 to fellow countryman Jim Wych. The following season, Bear entered only the Canadian Open, defeating R. John Bear (pirate)
John Philip Bear, last name also spelled Beare, was a 17th-century English pirate active in the Caribbean who also served with the Spanish and French. History Bear was granted a privateering commission in September 1684 by Governor William Stapleton of Nevis, which he used to attack Spanish ships despite the commission only giving him leave to attack Indians and pirates. The Dutch Governor of Curacao in January 1685 ordered Bear tried for capturing a Spanish ship while the Dutch were at peace with Spain, which Bear avoided. However, in April 1686 Bear led a raid on Tortola, capturing slaves and abusing Dutch and English prisoners. As a result, the Dutch abandoned Tortola's fledgling colony. That July Stapleton renewed Bear's commission when Bear appeared in a different ship, claiming his former sloop was leaking which forced them to transfer to the frigate ''James''.
