John Baines (Egyptologist)
John Robert Baines, (born 17 March 1946) is a retired British Egyptologist and academic. From 1976 to 2013, he was Professor of Egyptology at the University of Oxford and a fellow of The Queen's College, Oxford. Early life Baines was born on 17 March 1946. He is the oldest son of Edward Russell Baines and his wife Dora Margaret Jean (née O’Brien). He was educated at Winchester College, an all boys public boarding school in Winchester, Hampshire, England. He went on to study Egyptology at the University of Oxford. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree (BA) in 1967, later promoted to Master of Arts (MA). He gained his Doctor of Philosophy degree (DPhil) in 1976. Academic career Baines was Professor of Egyptology at the University of Oxford from 1976 to 2013. He was one of the youngest professors at the university at the age of 30. John Baines (bobsledder)
John Baines (born 26 September 1985) is a bobsledder who competes for Team GB, and a comms specialist in the Royal Air Force. His Olympic debut was at the 2014 Winter Olympics in the two-man and four-man bobsleigh events, participating as a brakeman. Biography John Baines was born on 26 September 1985 in Middlesbrough, England. He went to school at Ormesby Primary School. In his youth, he competed locally in 100m and 200m track events. Baines joined the Royal Air Force at age 20; he works as a communications specialist. His first bobsleigh experience was on an RAF bobsleigh team; a few months later, he tried out in the Team GB trials and was accepted. The RAF gave him two years of support so that he could train for the 2014 Winter Olympics. Baines has competed in bobsledding since 2008. John Baines (footballer)
John Robert Baines (born 25 September 1937) is an English former footballer who played as a forward in the Football League for Colchester United. Career Born in Colchester, Baines joined his hometown club Colchester United from local amateur side Colchester Casuals, signing a professional deal in January 1960 following his national service. Baines made his first-team debut replacing the injured Neil Langman for three matches, making his debut in a 3–1 win at Layer Road against Halifax Town on 4 March. Unable to break into the first-team during the promotion winning season of 1961–62, Baines made one final appearance for the club on 1 September 1962, a 1–1 draw with Bournemouth at Dean Court, replacing Martyn King who had been given permission by manager Benny Fenton to appear in a table tennis tournament. John Baines (mathematician)
John Baines (1787–1838), was an English mathematician. Baines was born in the parish of Horbury, Yorkshire, in 1787. From 1810 at least, he sent mathematical contributions to periodicals, including ''Ladies' Diary,'' the ''Gentleman's Diary,'' the ''York Miscellany'', and other similar periodicals, which were noted for their geometrical and algebraic problems. He wrote to the ''Northern Star'' from Nottingham. The ''Ladies' Diary'' for 1833 carried a more substantial article on Georges Cuvier's Theory of the Earth, written to prove its confirmation of the Mosaic account. Bains showed an inclination to mathematics from his youth. In his latter years was a well-known correspondent. John Baynes
John Baynes (1758–1787) was an English lawyer and miscellaneous writer. Life Baynes was born at Middleham, Yorkshire, and educated at Richmond Grammar School in the same county, under Anthony Temple. Proceeding to Trinity College, Cambridge, he graduated B.A. in 1777, gaining one of Dr. Smith's prizes for philosophy and the first medal for classics. In 1780 he took his M.A. Baynes was admitted to Gray's Inn in 1778 or 1779, and read law with Alan Chambre. In 1779 he was elected a fellow of Trinity, and remained one till his death. Besides practising as a special pleader, Baynes turned his attention to politics, and like his tutor, John Jebb, became a zealous whig. He joined the Constitutional Society of London, and took an active part in the meeting at York in 1779. At the general election of 1784 he supported the nomination of William Wilberforce for Yorkshire, and inveighed against the late coalition of Portland and Lord North.
