John Baines (footballer)
John Robert Baines (born 25 September 1937) is an English former footballer who played as a forward in the Football League for Colchester United. Career Born in Colchester, Baines joined his hometown club Colchester United from local amateur side Colchester Casuals, signing a professional deal in January 1960 following his national service. Baines made his first-team debut replacing the injured Neil Langman for three matches, making his debut in a 3–1 win at Layer Road against Halifax Town on 4 March. Unable to break into the first-team during the promotion winning season of 1961–62, Baines made one final appearance for the club on 1 September 1962, a 1–1 draw with Bournemouth at Dean Court, replacing Martyn King who had been given permission by manager Benny Fenton to appear in a table tennis tournament. Colchester
Colchester ( ) is a city in Essex, in the East of England. It had a population of 122,000 in 2011. The demonym is Colcestrian. Dean Court
Dean Court, currently known as the Vitality Stadium for sponsorship purposes, is a football stadium in Kings Park, Boscombe, a suburb of Bournemouth, Dorset, England and the home ground of AFC Bournemouth. History In 1910, Boscombe F.C. was given a piece of land by the town's Cooper-Dean family, after whom the ground was named. The land was the site of an old gravel pit, and the ground was not built in time for the start of the 1910–11 season. As a result, the club played at the adjacent King's Park until moving into Dean Court in December 1910. However, the club facilities were still not ready, and players initially had to change in a nearby hotel. Table tennis, also known as ping-pong and whiff-whaff, is a sport in which two or four players hit a lightweight ball, also known as the ping-pong ball, back and forth across a table using small solid rackets. It takes place on a hard table divided by a net. Except for the initial serve, the rules are generally as follows: Players must allow a ball played toward them to bounce once on their side of the table and must return it so that it bounces on the opposite side. A point is scored when a player fails to return the ball within the rules. Play is fast and demands quick reactions. Martyn King
Martyn Noel Geoffrey King (23 August 1937 – 25 December 2019) was an English professional footballer who played as a forward. Career King signed for Colchester United from local side Pegasus in 1956, but it was not until 1959, when he was on the verge of completing National Service that he was available for every game. He responded by equalling Kevin McCurley's 30 League goals in-a-season club record including a trio of hat tricks. In total, he notched six hat-tricks in U's colours. On 30 December 1961, after a 4–1 Boxing Day defeat at Bradford City, United set their club record victory in the return fixture, with both King and his strike partner Bobby Hunt scoring four goals each as the Colchester ran out 9–1 winners. Forwards (also known as attackers) are outfield positions in an association football team who play the furthest up the pitch and are therefore most responsible for scoring goals as well as assisting them. As with any attacking player, the role of the forward relies heavily on being able to create space for attack.
