John Anderton (footballer)
John Anderton (born 7 February 1933) is an English former professional footballer who played in the Football League for Torquay United in the 1950s. Anderton was born in Skelmersdale. He began his career as a junior with Everton, turning professional in March 1951. Over the next three seasons, after suffering several injuries, he failed to make the first team at Goodison Park, and in July 1954 moved to Torquay United. His league debut came at right back on 22 September 1954 against Shrewsbury Town at Plainmoor, but he finally got his break towards the end of the season when he replaced Harry Smith at left back, playing the final 11 games of the season. He began the following season as first choice, but had to share the spot with Bill Towers and Smith, making 24 appearances as the Gulls finished in fifth place. Skelmersdale
Skelmersdale is a town in Lancashire, England, on the River Tawd, west of Wigan, northeast of Liverpool and southwest of Preston. In 2006, it had a population of 38,813. The town is known locally as Skem . While the first record of the town is in the ''Domesday Book'' of 1086, much of the town, including the current town centre, was developed as a second wave new town in the 1960s. The town's initial development as a coal town coincided with the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century; the town lies on the Lancashire Coalfield. Geography Skelmersdale is situated in a small valley on the River Tawd. Bill Towers (footballer)
William Harry Towers (13 July 1920 – April 2000) was an English professional footballer. He was born in Leicester. Towers signed for Leicester City from local side Bentley Eng. in January 1945, making 4 league appearances in the first post-war Football League season. He was signed by Jack Butler for Torquay United in October 1946 and went on to make 292 first team games (274 in the league), all of which came at either wing-half or right-back. Before retiring in 1955, Towers played under 5 managers at Plainmoor and played in the Gulls' 1954–55 run in the FA Cup in which the Gulls beat Leeds United before losing 1–0 at home to Huddersfield Town in front of the biggest crowd ever seen at Plainmoor. Hastings () is a large seaside town and borough in East Sussex on the south coast of England, east to the county town of Lewes and south east of London. Harry Arthur Smith (born 10 October 1932, died 29 Dec 2016) was an English former professional footballer who played as a full back in the Football League for Torquay United and Bristol City. He was born in Wolverhampton. Career Smith joined West Bromwich Albion as an amateur, but left to join Torquay United in 1953 without breaking into the Baggies' first team. He made his Torquay debut in a 3–1 win away to Walsall on 5 December 1953, with the regular left-back Jimmy Drinkwater out of the side. He initially lost his place when Drinkwater returned, but after two games out of the side, regained his place, Drinkwater switching to right-back as the on-loan Harry Parfitt missed out. He began the following season as the regular left-back in the Torquay side, playing in the FA Cup 4th round tie at home to Huddersfield Town in front of a record crowd of 21,908, which Huddersfield won 1–0. Plainmoor
Plainmoor is an association football stadium located in the Plainmoor suburb of Torquay, Devon, England. Since 1921, the stadium has been the home of Torquay United Football Club, who currently compete in the National League, the fifth tier of English football. During the first half of the 2018-19 National League South season, the stadium also hosted Truro City games. History At the time of Torquay United's formation in 1899, Plainmoor was the home of Torquay Athletic Rugby Football Club. In 1904, the rugby club secured the lease of the Recreation Ground, where United had been playing, and United's Torquay and District League rivals Ellacombe moved into the vacated site at Plainmoor, leaving United homeless.
