John Allison Sprague
John Allison Sprague (April 10, 1844 – September 14, 1907) was an Ontario farmer and political figure. He represented Prince Edward in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1886 to 1894 as a Liberal member. In 1864, he married Ellen A. Badgley. He was a justice of the peace and served fifteen years on the township council, also serving as reeve. Sprague was a captain in the local militia. He lived near Demorestville. With his son Grant, he established a rural telephone company serving Prince Edward County in 1898. He died suddenly in 1907. Sophiasburgh Township, Ontario
Sophiasburgh is an historic township in southern Ontario, Canada, one of the three original townships that formed Prince Edward County. The other two townships were Ameliasburgh and Marysburgh. It was named in 1798 after Princess Sophia, the fifth daughter of George III. The township was amalgamated into the Corporation of the County of Prince Edward, a single tier municipality, on January 1, 1998. After the American Revolution, a number of United Empire Loyalists who settled in the area of Picton Bay. The White Chapel, north of Picton, was the first Methodist church built in the county. The Province of Canada (or the United Province of Canada or the United Canadas) was a British colony in North America from 1841 to 1867. Its formation reflected recommendations made by John Lambton, 1st Earl of Durham, in the Report on the Affairs of British North America following the Rebellions of 1837–1838. Picton, Ontario
Picton is an unincorporated community located in Prince Edward County in southeastern Ontario, roughly east of Toronto. It is the county's largest community and former seat located at the southwestern end of Picton Bay, a branch of the Bay of Quinte, which is along the northern shoreline of Lake Ontario. The town is named for Lieutenant General Sir Thomas Picton, who served in the British Army during the Peninsular War in Spain and Portugal. Demorestville, Ontario
Demorestville is a small village in the township of Sophiasburgh in Prince Edward County, Ontario, Canada. It was named after Guilliame Demorest (12 February 1769 – 10 December 1848). Once much larger, it currently has a population of approximately one hundred. A formerly much larger (but now small) creek (known locally as "The Crick") which once powered mills fed by Fish Lake, flows through the center of town and has now been protected under the Demorestville Conservation Area. History In 1783 explorer Guilliame Demorest crossed the Bay of Quinte where he followed a stream flowing from an inland lake. Finding it full of fish, he gave it the name "Fish Lake", the name it has retained since. Heading back downstream he built his home near the site of a small waterfall, which became the first building in Demorestville.
