Johan Verbeke
Johan Verbeke (born 9 July 1951) is a Belgian diplomat, the former Belgian Ambassador to the United States until 2016. Early life Verbeke holds a Master of Laws (LL.M.) from the Yale Law School and a Diplôme d’Etudes Supérieures Européennes (D.E.S.) from the Université de Nancy. Dirk Wouters (born 1955) was Belgium's ambassador to the United States. Education Wouters earned a B.A. degree in law and economics at the University of Antwerp in 1975, a Master of Laws at the University of Leuven in 1978 and an M.S. at the London School of Economics in 1979. Diplomatic career Wouters started his diplomatic career in the Belgian Federal Public Service Foreign Affairs in 1980, where he worked in the Consular and Disarmament Division and joined the Belgian delegation to the European Union in 1986. Jan Matthysen is a former Belgian ambassador to the United States. Life Matthysen graduated from Ghent University in 1973 with a degree in Contemporary Political History. Having joined the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1984, he became First Secretary at the Belgian Embassy in Bonn, then Counselor at the Embassy in then East Berlin, a position which he held through the German reunification in 1990. He was a chargé d'affaires and later ambassador in Belgrade beginning in 1994. In 1997 he became Head of the NATO desk at the headquarters of the Foreign Ministry in Brussels. The United Nations Observer Mission in Georgia (UNOMIG) was established by United Nations Security Council Resolution 858 in August 1993 to verify compliance with a 27 July 1993 ceasefire agreement between the Georgia (country), Republic of Georgia and forces in Abkhazia with special attention given to the situation in the city of Sukhumi, Georgia. It was also to investigate reports of ceasefire violations, attempt to resolve such incidents with the parties involved, and to report to the Secretary-General of the United Nations on the implementation of its mandate. 88 military advisors were authorized to be deployed to the region.
