Johan Kjær Hansen
Johan Kjær Hansen (7 April 1907 – 29 June 1944) was a member of the Danish resistance executed by the German occupying power. Biography Hansen was born in Hjørring on 7 April 1907 as son of deceased bicycle manufacturer Hans Christian Johan Andreas Hansen and 29-year-old widow Anna Elisabeth Nielsen née Kjær and baptized in Gassum on the second Sunday after Trinity. In addition to being a member of the Hvidsten group Hansen was also a mechanic. The group helped the British Special Operations Executive parachute weapons and supplies into Denmark for distribution to the resistance. In March 1944 the Gestapo made an "incredible number of arrests" including in the region of Randers where a number of members of the Hvidsten group were arrested. The following month De frie Danske reported that several arrestees from Hvidsten had been transferred from Randers to Vestre Fængsel. Parish Register
A parish register in an ecclesiastical parish is a handwritten volume, normally kept in the parish church in which certain details of religious ceremonies marking major events such as baptisms (together with the dates and names of the parents), marriages (with the names of the partners), children, and burials (that had taken place within the parish) are recorded. Vestre Fængsel
Vestre Prison ( da, Vestre Fængsel) is the main jail of the Danish capital, Copenhagen. Erected in 1895, it is Denmark's largest prison with a total capacity of 530 inmates. Mindelunden I Ryvangen - Grave-3
Ryvangen Memorial Park ( da, Mindelunden i Ryvangen) is a memorial park in Ryvangen officially inaugurated on 5 May 1950 to commemorate fallen members of the Danish resistance to the German occupation of Denmark during World War II. The location in ''Ryvangen'', which means "rye field", was acquired in 1893 by the army for a barracks and exercise field. On 29 August 1943, when the Danish cooperation with Germany broke down the German occupying forces seized the army and naval facilities in all of Denmark including Ryvangen. While the German army used the barracks for themselves, part of the exercise field was used as an execution and burial site for members of the Danish resistance. The execution site consisted of three wooden poles to which the condemned were tied and executed by firing squad. Hvidsten Inn
Hvidsten Inn ( da, Hvidsten Kro) is a historic, listed inn, formerly a coaching inn located in Hvidsten between Randers and Mariager. Today the inn consists of five buildings of which the oldest is the travellers stable from 1790. A notable inn keeper was Marius Fiil who in 1893 was born in the inn as son of its owner then, Niels Pedersen (Fiil) and who was keeper of the inn from 1925 to 1944. In 1930 the residents of the Inn were the Fiil family with Marius Fiil's 72-year-old father as Inn keeper, five children and a farm hand, a maid and a manager. In 1943 Hvidsten Inn became the center for the Hvidsten group, which was part of the Danish resistance movement. The following year the Gestapo arrested most of the group's members, including the inn keeper and his assistant son who were executed on 29 June 1944 leaving behind the widow Gudrun Fiil who took over the inn. Niels Fiil
Niels Fiil (12 June 1920 – 29 June 1944) was a member of the Danish resistance executed by the German occupying power. Biography Fiil was born in Hvidsten on 12 June 1920 to house proprietor and bicycle dealer Marius Fiil and wife Gudrun Fiil. In 1930 he lived in Hvidsten Inn with his 72-year-old grandfather as inn keeper, his parents and four sisters and a farm hand, a maid and a manager. He was confirmed in Spentrup church in 1934 on the first Sunday after Easter, while living in Hvidsten with his family. He received his confirmation with a waiver, since he had not yet turned 14. During the occupation the family and other locals formed a resistance group, the Hvidsten group. In addition to being a member of the Hvidsten group, Fiil was also a farmer while helping out at the inn.
