Queensland Legislative Assembly
The Legislative Assembly of Queensland is the sole chamber of the unicameral Parliament of Queensland established under the Constitution of Queensland. Elections are held every four years and are done by full preferential voting. The Assembly has 93 members, who have used the letters MP after their names since 2000 (previously they were styled MLAs). There is approximately the same population in each electorate; however, that has not always been the case (in particular, a malapportionment system - not, strictly speaking, a gerrymander - dubbed the ''Bjelkemander'' was in effect during the 1970s and 1980s). David Bowman (Australian Politician)
David Bowman (24 August 1860 – 25 February 1916) was a Labor politician in the Legislative Assembly of Queensland and Queensland Leader of the Opposition from 1908 to 1912. Early life Bowman was born in Bendigo, Victoria on 4 August 1860. He was son of Archibald Bowman, a miner and Isabella Bowman (née Spence) both of whom were born in Scotland. Trained as a bootmaker in Victoria, Bowman moved north to Queensland in 1888. The following year, Bowman became the president of the Brisbane District Council of the Australian Labour Federation (ALF). In 1891, as an employee of the ALF, Bowman was responsible for organizing shearers and bushworkers during the pastoral strike. In 1892, he was elected as vice-president and the following year he became the president of the ALF. Politics Bowman's first attempt at entering politics was at the 1893 colonial election in the seat South Brisbane, losing out to Harry Turley and Charles Midson in the two member electorate. 1912 Queensland State Election
Elections were held in the Australian state of Queensland on 27 April 1912 to elect the 72 members of the state's Legislative Assembly. The election was the first for the recently formed Liberal government of Digby Denham, who had been premier since 7 February 1911. The opposition Labor Party was led by David Bowman, who had been Labor leader since 15 April 1907. Results Denham and his government were returned to office despite a swing to Labor of almost 10 percent. This was largely due to winning newly created seats in rural areas, while losing seats in Brisbane which mostly went to Labor. John Michael Cross
John Michael Cross (1 February 1859 – 12 April 1934) was a journalist and member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography Cross was born in Newcastle upon Tyne, England to parents Thomas Cross and his wife Elizabeth (née Burnett) and was educated in England. After his arrival in Australia he took up journalism and worked at several newspapers including the Brisbane Telegraph, the Northern Argus in Rockhampton, the Toowoomba Chronicle, the Maryborough Chronicle, and the Gympie Miner. He was also the editor of the Peoples' Newspaper in Rockhampton. After his time in parliament he continued as a journalist and Hansard reporter in Brisbane. He was a councillor of the Royal Society of St George and a member of the Esoteric Lodge of Masonry.
