Jodeldiplom
The ''Jodeldiplom'' ("yodeling diploma") is a fictitious degree created for a sketch by German humorist Loriot. The sketch pokes fun at the numerous degrees awarded by universities and folk high schools, which grant their recipients social status without providing any meaningful qualifications for the labor market. The term has since gained currency in German to refer to superfluous, useless, vanity-driven, or purchased academic qualifications (such as from a diploma mill), similar to the English terms underwater basket weaving or Mickey Mouse degree. Loriot sketch The sketch "Yodeling School" was produced by Radio Bremen as part of the episode ''Loriot VI'' and first broadcast on Das Erste on 7 December 1978. Bernhard-Viktor Christoph-Carl von Bülow (12 November 1923 – 22 August 2011), known as Vicco von Bülow or Loriot (), was a German comedian, humorist, cartoonist, film director, actor and writer. He was best known for his cartoons, the sketches from his 1976 television series ''Loriot'', alongside Evelyn Hamann, and his two movies, ''Ödipussi'' (1988) and ''Pappa Ante Portas'' (1991). On the television series ''Unsere Besten'' (''Our Best''), Loriot was ranked the 54th best German ever. In a special comedy episode of ''Unsere Besten'', he was ranked as the most famous German comedian ever. Underwater Basket Weaving
Underwater basket weaving is an idiom referring pejoratively to supposedly useless or absurd college or university courses and often generally to refer to a perceived decline in educational standards. The term also serves as an intentionally humorous generic answer to questions about an academic degree. It is also used to humorously refer to any non-academic elective course, specifically one that does not count towards any graduation requirements. Possible origin of the phrase In weaving willow baskets, a trough of water is needed in which to soak the dried willow rods. They are then left to stand until pliable and ready to be used in weaving. The weaving is, however, usually not done under water (see counterexample below). Yodeling
Yodeling (also jodeling) is a form of singing which involves repeated and rapid changes of pitch between the low-pitch chest register (or "chest voice") and the high-pitch head register or falsetto. The English word ''yodel'' is derived from the German (and originally Austro-Bavarian) word ''jodeln'', meaning "to utter the syllable ''jo''" (pronounced "yo" in English). This vocal technique is used in many cultures worldwide. Recent scientific research concerning yodeling and non-Western cultures has shown that music and speech evolved from a common prosodic precursor. Alpine yodeling was a longtime rural tradition in Europe, and became popular in the 1830s as entertainment in theaters and music halls. Mickey Mouse degrees (or Mickey Mouse courses, also known as bird courses in Canada) is a term for university degree courses regarded as worthless or irrelevant. The term is a dysphemism, originating in the common usage of "Mickey Mouse" as a pejorative. It came to prominence in the UK after use by the country's national tabloids. Wertach is a small town in the Oberallgäu district, southern Bavaria, (Germany), in the German Alps. It is situated on the river Wertach, southeast of Kempten. The town was the childhood home of the writer W. G. Sebald. History Wertach was first mentioned in 955 and received in 1423 the town privileges.
