Jo Ledger
Jo Ledger OBE (9 June 1926 – 27 June 2010) was an artist who was Art Director for Royal Doulton. Joseph William Ledger was born in Beverley in 1926 and went on to study at the Royal College of Art, where he was awarded the Medal of Distinction, and École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Beaux Arts in Paris. He taught art and design at University of Brighton Faculty of Arts, Brighton and Kingston University#Kingston School of Art, Kingston. He received commissions for religious murals and stained glass before joining Royal Doulton at Burslem in 1954 as Art Director, where he remained until he retired in 1989. His contributions included innovative Royal Doulton Tableware, a range of ceramic Royal Crown Derby paperweights and figurines designed by Royal Academicians. He was appointed Order of the British Empire , OBE for services to the British ceramic industry in the 1989 Birthday Honours. Royal Doulton
Royal Doulton is an English ceramic and home accessories manufacturer that was founded in 1815. Operating originally in Vauxhall, London, and later moving to Lambeth, in 1882 it opened a factory in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, in the centre of English pottery. From the start, the backbone of the business was a wide range of utilitarian wares, mostly stonewares, including storage jars, tankards and the like, and later extending to pipes for drains, lavatories and other bathroom ceramics. From 1853 to 1901, its wares were marked Doulton & Co., then from 1901, when a royal warrant was given, Royal Doulton. It always made some more decorative wares, initially still mostly stoneware, and from the 1860s, the firm made considerable efforts to get a reputation for design, in which it was largely successful, as one of the first British makers of art pottery. Beverley is a market town, market and minster (church), minster town and a civil parishes in England, civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England, of which it is the county town. Burslem
Burslem ( ) is one of the six towns that along with Hanley, Tunstall, Fenton, Longton and Stoke-upon-Trent form part of the city of Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire, England. It is often referred to as the "mother town" of Stoke on Trent. Topography Burslem is on the eastern ridge of the Fowlea Valley, the Fowlea being one of the main early tributaries of the River Trent. Burslem embraces the areas of Middleport, Dalehall, Longport, Westport, Trubshaw Cross, and Brownhills. The Trent & Mersey Canal cuts through, to the west and south of the town centre. The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service.
