Jimmy Campbell (fiddler)
James Campbell (1937 – 22 January 2022) was an Irish musician. He is regarded as one of Donegal's most influential traditional musicians. Biography Born in 1937, Campbell grew up in a house that was steeped in Donegal fiddle music. His father and grandfather were well known fiddle players. The Campbell home was a regular venue for musicians to come to visit and play music, including both Mickey and John Doherty. Campbell emigrated to Scotland where he worked as a tunnel tiger, and later settled in London. He was a mainstay of the traditional music scene in Britain, and has associations with Brendan McGlinchey, the Dwyers of Ardgroom and Paddy Conroy, the Galway accordion player. Glenties () is a town in County Donegal, Ireland. It is situated where two glens meet, north-west of the Bluestack Mountains, near the confluence of two rivers. Glenties is the largest centre of population in the parish of Iniskeel. Glenties has won the Irish Tidy Towns Competition five times in 1958, 1959, 1960, 1962 and 1995 and has won a medal many other times. , the population is 805. History Evidence of early settlement in the area is given by the many dolmens, standing stones and earthen ringforts dating from the Bronze Age. The area became part of the baronies of Boylagh and Bannagh in 1609, which was granted to Scottish undertakers as part of the Ulster Plantation. Glenties was a regular stopping point on the road between the established towns of Ballybofey and Killybegs, and grew from this in the 17th and 18th centuries. John Doherty (musician)
John Doherty (1900 – 26 January 1980) was an Irish folk fiddler. Biography John Doherty was born in 1900 in Ardara, County Donegal. He came from a family of Irish Travellers who worked as tinsmiths and horse traders. His birth certificate was uncovered in recent years, firstly by Professor Alun Evans, and subsequently by researcher Caomhin MacAoidh, allowing confirmation that his date of birth was 1900, rather than 1895, which has been recorded in error in several publications. His father Mickey 'Mor' Doherty was a fiddler as were a number of his brothers and sisters. Mickey Mor married Mary McConnell, a singer (whose brothers Alec and Mickey were well-known musicians in south Donegal). Together they had nine children and John was the youngest. In an interview in the 1970s he said that he had to practice in the barn as a teenager, and was not allowed to play fiddle in the company of his parents until he had mastered "Bonny Kate".
