James Lind
James Lind (4 October 1716 – 13 July 1794) was a Scottish doctor. He was a pioneer of naval hygiene in the Royal Navy. By conducting one of the first ever clinical trials, he developed the theory that citrus fruits cured scurvy. Lind argued for the health benefits of better ventilation aboard naval ships, the improved cleanliness of sailors' bodies, clothing and bedding, and below-deck fumigation with sulphur and arsenic. He also proposed that fresh water could be obtained by distilling sea water. His work advanced the practice of preventive medicine and improved nutrition. Early life Lind was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1716 into a family of merchants, then headed by his father, James Lind. He had an elder sister. He was educated at the High School in Edinburgh. James Lind FRS FRSE FRCPE (1736–1812) was a Scottish natural philosopher and physician. Life James Lind was born in Gorgie, Edinburgh on 17 May 1736. He studied medicine at Edinburgh University under William Cullen and Joseph Black, and graduated in 1768. In 1766, he then joined the East India Company as surgeon. In 1768 he received his doctorate (MD) from Edinburgh upon completing a dissertation on marsh fever (malaria) in Bengal. On 6 November 1770 he was admitted a Fellow of the College of Physicians, Edinburgh. Lind was also a corresponding member of the Lunar Society. Sir James Lind KCB ( – 12 June 1823) was an officer of the Royal Navy who served during the American War of Independence and the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. The son of James Lind, a distinguished naval physician, Lind also embarked on a career at sea, but served in a more front line role. After serving on a number of different ships he finally received his own command in 1800, but his first chance to show his ability came only in 1803 when in command of . Here he captured a French privateer after his imitation of a merchant ship encouraged the privateer to actually attack his heavily armed frigate. He then revealed the true nature of his ship and the hapless privateer had no choice but to swiftly surrender. James Gordon Lind (8 March 1913 – 22 April 1980) was a Liberal party member of the House of Commons of Canada. He was born in Westminster Township, Ontario and became a lumber merchant by career. Jim Lind was first elected at the Middlesex East riding in the 1965 general election, after a previous unsuccessful campaign in that riding in the 1963 election. He was re-elected to Parliament in the 1968 election at Middlesex riding. Jim Lind (American Football)
Jim Lind (born November 11, 1947) is a former American football player and coach. He served as the head football coach at the University of Minnesota Morris from 1983 to 1986 and at the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire from 1987 to 1991, compiling a career college football record of 42–43–4. Lind served in the United States Navy before attending Bemidji State University, where he played football and received a physical education and health degree in 1973. He coached the football and wrestling teams at Underwood High School in Minnesota after receiving his degree. As the head football coach at the University of Minnesota, Morris, he coached the team to an NIC co-championship in 1984 and an NIC championship in 1986.
