Jim Hookway
Ronald James Hookway (1917–1982) was a United Kingdom greyhound trainer. He was the UK champion trainer in 1965 and 1967. Profile Jim Hookway trained at Owlerton Stadium in Sheffield. His first significant feat was reaching the 1954 Oaks final with Rimmells Pearl. In 1955 he then trained St Leger and Cesarewitch finalists. His first major classic success came in 1965, when he won the Scottish Greyhound Derby; securing a 1-2 finish with Clonmannon Flash and O'Leary. Hookway became Trainer of the Year in 1965 and 1967 and won the sports ultimate accolade when winning the 1967 English Greyhound Derby with Tric-Trac. English Greyhound Derby
The English Greyhound Derby is the most prestigious race on the British Greyhound racing in the United Kingdom, greyhound racing calendar, with a history stretching back to 1927. It was first held at White City Stadium, but moved to Wimbledon Stadium in 1985, and then Towcester Greyhound Stadium in 2017, Nottingham in 2019 and back to Towcester in 2021. Scottish Greyhound Derby
The Scottish Greyhound Derby was an original classic greyhound competition held at Shawfield Stadium. Held at Carntyne Stadium from 1928 to 1968, after the closure of Carntyne the race appeared at Shawfield from 1970 until 1985. In 1988 the Greyhound Racing Association (GRA), moved the race to Powderhall Stadium in Edinburgh because they had the rights to the event and wanted it to take place at one of their tracks. After just two years it returned to Glasgow and Shawfield following the sale of Powderhall by the GRA. Cesarewitch (greyhounds)
The Cesarewitch is a greyhound racing competition held at Crayford Stadium. It was originally one of the classic races held in the British racing calendar and was inaugurated in 1928 and held at West Ham Stadium until its closure in 1972. The event switched to Belle Vue Stadium until 1995 when it was transferred to Greyhound Racing Association (GRA) sister track Catford Stadium. The GRA closed Catford in 2000 and switched the Cesarewitch to their newly-acquired track Oxford Stadium. Despite the event moving four times it remained a major competition until its demise in 2012 at Oxford. In 2020, the competition was brought back by Entain and was held at their stadia of Romford Stadium and Crayford and sponsored by the company's brand Ladbrokes Coral as a category 1 race. Owlerton Stadium
Owlerton Stadium, also known as Sheffield Stadium, is a purpose-built speedway track built in 1929 which also hosts greyhound racing The track is in Owlerton near Hillsborough in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England. Greyhound racing takes place on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday evenings and every Monday and Thursday afternoon. There is a modern glass-fronted Panorama Restaurant accommodating up to 300 people, executive suites, fast food facilities and a number of bars. The stadium is also home to the Sheffield Tigers Speedway team and hosts BriSCA Formula One stock car racing events. Speedway takes place on a Thursday evening and the stadium has a total capacity for 4,000 spectators. It is operated by the A & S Leisure Group, the majority shareholder of which is Dave Allen. Oaks (greyhounds)
The Oaks is an original classic greyhound competition, held at Perry Barr Stadium. It was run at White City Stadium from 1927 until 1958, and gained classic status in September 1939, becoming the seventh classic race but due to the war it was suspended until 1945. The race was held at Harringay Stadium from 1959 until 1987 and then to Wimbledon Stadium in 1988 until 2012. In 2013 the Greyhound Racing Association (GRA) decided to move the event to sister track Belle Vue Stadium and just five years later, during 2018, it switched to Towcester following the decision by GRA to reduce their major race schedule. A sixth change of venue was necessary in 2018 following the sudden closure of Towcester, leading owner John Turner stepped in to save the event with a late scheduling being organised in December at Swindon Stadium. St Leger (greyhounds)
The St Leger is an original classic greyhound competition. Race history It was run at Wembley Stadium from 1928 until 1998 but when the Wembley Greyhounds ended it moved to Wimbledon Stadium in 1999. The race is considered to be the premier stayers (between 500 and 700 metres) competition in greyhound racing. The competition came to an end at Wimbledon after the 2016 running before being switched to GRA sister track Perry Barr. The prize money has reduced in recent times due to financial issues in 2010 and the loss of a Sky TV contract more recently. However, Premier Greyhound Racing doubled the winner's prize money to £20,000 in 2022. 1967 English Greyhound Derby
The 1967 Greyhound Derby took place during June with the final being held on 24 June 1967 at White City Stadium. The winner was Tric Trac and the winning owner Nat Pinson received £6,750. Final result At White City (over 525 yards): Distances 1, 4¾, 1¼, 4¾, 5 (lengths) The distances between the greyhounds are in finishing order and shown in lengths. From 1950 one length was equal to 0.08 of one second. Competition Report Spectre II was the ante-post favourite leading into the 1967 Derby and his owner Nat Pinson refused a £5,000 offer for the greyhound before the competition started. Pinson also owned Tric-Trac and put the pair with Owlerton trainer Jim Hookway.
