Jiguaní
Jiguaní () is a town and municipality in the Granma Province of Cuba. It is located east of Bayamo, the provincial capital. Overview The municipality is divided into the barrios of Babiney, Baire, Bijagual, La Villa, Los Negros, Maffo, Rihito and Santa Rita. The name "Jiguaní" is of Taíno origin, and means "height of the river". The town of Jiguaní was a stronghold and a starting point in the independence war of 1895. Tercer Frente (, Spanish for "Third Front") is a municipality in the Santiago de Cuba Province of Cuba. It is centered on the town, and municipal seat, of Cruce de los Baños. Contramaestre (Spanish for "boatswain") is a Cuban town and municipality in the Santiago de Cuba Province. The Cuban War of Independence (), fought from 1895 to 1898, was the last of three liberation wars that Cuba fought against Spain, the other two being the Ten Years' War (1868–1878) and the Little War (1879–1880). Bayamo
Bayamo is the capital city of the Granma Province of Cuba and one of the largest cities in the Oriente region. Overview The community of Bayamo lies on a plain by the Bayamo River. It is affected by the violent Bayamo wind. One of the most important education institutions in the province is the University of Granma. History Established in 1513, Bayamo was the third of seven cities founded by Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar. Granma Province
Granma is one of the provinces of Cuba. Its capital is Bayamo. Other towns include Manzanillo (a port on the Gulf of Guacanayabo) and Pilón. Taíno People
The Taíno were a historic indigenous people of the Caribbean whose culture has been continued today by Taíno descendant communities and Taíno revivalist communities. At the time of European contact in the late 15th century, they were the principal inhabitants of most of what is now Cuba, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Haiti, Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, and the northern Lesser Antilles. The Lucayan branch of the Taíno were the first New World peoples encountered by Christopher Columbus, in the Bahama Archipelago on October 12, 1492.
