The Jewell Building is a city landmark in North Omaha, Nebraska. Built in 1923, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Located at 2221 North 24th Street, the building was home to the Dreamland Ballroom for more than 40 years, and featured performances by many touring jazz and blues legends, including Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, and Lionel Hampton. The building has been designated as a Landmark by the City of Omaha, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is an example of the kind of venue that was integral to the cultural transmission and interchange of musical styles and art, especially in the years before television. William Jewell College is a private liberal arts college in Liberty, Missouri. It was founded in 1849 by members of the Missouri Baptist Convention and endowed with $10,000 by William Jewell. It was associated with the Missouri Baptist Convention for over 150 years until its separation in 2003 and is now an independent institution. Since becoming a nonsectarian institution, the college's enrollment has fallen by approximately 40% to 739 students in 2018. Jewell is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. Jewell James (born February 2, 1953; also known as Praying Wolf, Sit ki kadem, and Tse Sealth) is a Lummi Nation master carver of totem poles, author, and an environmental activist. He is a descendant of Chief Seattle. Early life and education Jewell James was born on February 2, 1953, on the Lummi Indian Reservation, west of Bellingham. He is a descendant of Chief Seattle, the namesake of Seattle, Washington. His brother Dale James studied wood carving prior to his own study. James attended the University of Washington in the early 1970s, studying political science. While in college he studied carving under Marvin Oliver, and later apprenticed under him. Jewell Fjord, also known as "Jewell Inlet", is a fjord in Peary Land, northern Greenland. To the northwest, the fjord opens into the Lincoln Sea of the Arctic Ocean.
