Jesús Escandell
Jesús Escandell Romero is a Cuban politician, president of the Cuban trade union "Central de Trabajadores de Cuba" (CTC) from 1985 to 1991. In 1996 he was arrested, and spent nine months jailed without charge, at the Cuban political prison Villa Marista. Villa Marista is a prison in Havana, Cuba, notorious for its detention of political prisoners by the Cuban national security agency. Its prisoners have included dissident Vladimiro Roca and politician Jesús Escandell. Villa Marista school Villa Marista was originally a Catholic school for boys. Centre For American Studies (CEA)
The Centre for American Studies ( es, Centro de Estudios sobre América, CEA) is an academic institution in Havana, Cuba. Established along similar institutions by the Cuban Government in 1964, it was intended to serve at the same time to provide intelligence information for Cuban leaders, and to provide propaganda by proposing to international audiences Cuban views on certain topics. The centre became renowned in the 1990s, when some of its most prominent members, including economist Julio Carranza and Pedro Monreal, and sociologists Haroldo Dilla and Aurelio Alonso, started to promote views that were not in concert with those of the government. This led in 1996 to a purge of the institution, resulting in all its core academics being transferred to other functions. Many of them were also expelled from the Cuban Communist Party, and some left the country. Cuban Dissidents
The Cuban dissident movement is a political movement in Cuba whose aim is to replace the current government with a liberal democracy. According to Human Rights Watch, the Cuban government represses nearly all forms of political dissent. Background 1959 Cuban Revolution Fidel Castro came to power with the Cuban Revolution of 1959. By the end of 1960, according to Paul H. Lewis in ''Authoritarian Regimes in Latin America'', all opposition newspaper had been closed down and all radio and television stations were in state control. Lewis states that moderate teachers and professors were purged, about 20,000 dissidents were held and tortured in prisons. Homosexuals as well as other "deviant" groups who were barred from military conscription, were forced to conduct their compulsory military service in camps called "Military Units to Aid Production" in the 1960s, and were subjected to political " reeducation".
