Jerónima Llorente
Jerónima Llorente ( Añover de Tajo, 1793 - Madrid, 1848) was a Spanish actress of the first half of the 19th century. Biography She was born in 1793 in the Toledo town of Añover de Tajo, which she left to fulfill her dream of being an actress. She made her debut at the age of 15 at the Teatro del Príncipe, where, directed by Juan Grimaldi, she achieved great popularity on the theater scene, playing strong characters. Her great achievements were achieved between 1835 and 1848 as a featured player of the company of Matilde Diez and Julián Romea, interpreting characters by Leandro Fernández de Moratín and Manuel Bretón de los Herreros. Death and legacy She died in 1848, and had a street dedicated in her honor in Madrid since 1887. Matilde Diez (1818 – 17 January 1883) was a Spanish theater actress. Biography Diez was born in Madrid, and began acting when she was only twelve years old with the play ''La huérfana de Bruxelles'', performed at the Teatro de Cádiz. In 1834 the theater impresario Juan Grimaldi hired her to work in Madrid, reaping her first success with the play ''Clotilde'', by Federico Soulié. In 1836, she married the actor Julián Romea. Together they performed numerous plays at the Teatro Español, such as ''Gabriela de Belle-Isle'' or the first performance of a play by William Shakespeare directly translated from English: ''Macbeth'', in 1838 at the Teatro del Príncipe. Julián Romea Yanguas (Murcia, February 16, 1813Loeches, August 10, 1868) was a Spanish theater actor and writer. He heads a theatrical dynasty that also includes his nephew Julián Romea Parra and his son Alberto Romea Catalina. Biography Born in the Plaza de Santa Catalina, in the Murcian capital, Julián was the second of the six children of Mariano Romea y Bayona, an Aragonese who administered the assets of the Marquises of Espinardo in Murcia, and of Ignacia Yanguas and Prat de Rivera, a Valencian based in Madrid. In 1816 he moved with his family to Alcalá de Henares, but when his father was banished for his liberal past and fled to Portugal, his mother returned to Murcia with her children in 1823; there the young Romea studied the humanities at the Major Seminary of San Fulgencio; by then he already intervened as an actor in amateur pieces. Leandro Fernández De Moratín
Leandro Fernández de Moratín (; 10 March 1760 – 21 June 1828) was a Spanish dramatist, translator and neoclassical poet. Biography Moratín was born in Madrid the son of Nicolás Fernández de Moratín, a major literary reformer in Spain from 1762 until his death in 1828. Distrusting the teaching offered in Spain's universities at the time, Leandro grew up in the rich literary environment of his father and became an admirer of Enlightenment thought. In addition to translating works of Molière and William Shakespeare into Spanish, he himself was a major poet, dramatist and man of letters whose writings promoted the reformist ideas associated with the Spanish Enlightenment. Early in his career, he was supported by statesman and author Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos, who, in 1787, arranged for him to study for a year in Paris. Manuel Bretón de los Herreros (19 December 17968 November 1873) was a Spanish dramatist. Biography He was born in Quel ( Logrono), and was educated at Madrid. Enlisting on 24 May 1812, he served against the French in Valencia and Catalonia, and retired with the rank of corporal on 8 March 1822. He lost his left eye in a duel he held in 1818 in Jerez de la Frontera. He obtained a minor post in the civil service under the liberal government, and on his discharge determined to earn his living by writing for the stage.
