Jerry S. Rawls
Jerry S. Rawls is an American businessman and philanthropist. He is the co-founder and chairman of Finisar. Biography Early life Jerry Rawls was born in Houston, Texas, and graduated from Bellaire High School in Houston in 1962. He earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Texas Tech University in 1967. While at Texas Tech, he played freshman basketball, was an officer of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, and was a member of several other student organizations. He went on to earn a Master of Science Degree in Industrial Administration from the Krannert School of Management at Purdue University in 1968. Career He joined Raychem Corporation, a materials science and engineering company in Menlo Park, California and began a twenty-year career with them. The Rawls College of Business (officially Jerry S. Rawls College of Business Administration, commonly referred to as Rawls Business) is the business school of Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. Rawls Business offers curriculum for both undergraduate and graduate students (including doctoral) and received its initial business accreditation in 1958 from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). Established in 1942, Texas Tech's business school was originally known as the Division of Commerce. In 1956, the school was renamed the College of Business Administration. Jerry S. Rawls Hall is a building on the Purdue University campus, Krannert School of Management. The building is named after Jerry S. Rawls, a Krannert alumnus, who donated $10 million toward its construction. Rawls was formerly the chief executive officer of Finisar Corp. The building is connected to the Krannert building via an above ground walkway. The , four story, $37 million building houses 13 classrooms, a multimedia-based auditorium, 25 breakout rooms, distance learning facilities, computer labs and a career center. The Rawls Course, located in Lubbock, Texas, United States, is the home of the Texas Tech Red Raiders golf teams. It is an NCAA championship course constructed through a major gift from Jerry S. Rawls and supported by revenue from students, faculty, staff, donors, and the general public. Design The Rawls Course was designed by Tom Doak of Renaissance Golf Design, Inc., Traverse City, Michigan. Starting from just a cotton field, the course was created to imitate the land east and south of Lubbock, where the Great Plains suddenly begin falling into the valleys and canyons that lead to the Caprock region.
