Flint Public Library (Flint, Michigan)
The Flint Public Library is the public library serving Flint, Michigan. It was founded in 1851, and its current building on the Flint Cultural Center campus was built in 1958. It has hosted the Michigan Storytellers Festival since 1981 and the Julia A. Moore Poetry Contest (to celebrate bad poetry) since 1994. During the Flint water crisis, the library played a key role supporting the community, and in the aftermath it partnered with StoryCorps to create oral history interviews of residents' experiences. The Flint Public Library's collections document the City of Flint and Genesee County, local African-American history and literature, and genealogy. Glenwood Cemetery (Flint, Michigan)
Glenwood Cemetery is a cemetery located at 2500 W Court Street in Flint, Michigan. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2010. History Flint was incorporated as a city in 1855. At the time, the area cemetery was beginning to decay, so in 1857 a group of leading citizens met to plan the construction of a cemetery suitable for the new city. The group formed the Glenwood Cemetery Association. Thirty acres of land was quickly acquired, and George T. Clark hired as a civil engineer. The new Glenwood Cemetery formally dedicated in October 1857. A gateway, chapel, and receiving vault (all now long-demolished) and the sexton's office (still standing) were built soon after, and the grounds graded and landscaped, including broad, winding roads and footpaths. The cemetery added six acres of land in 1901, and constructed a new mausoleum in 1914. Original the ''Democrat'' was named ''The Flint Republican'' and started publication in 1845 by Daniel S. Merritt. Price at that time was $1.50 cash or $2 in produce. In 1848, the ''Republican'' was acquired and renamed to ''Genesee Democrat'' by Royal W. Jenny. With the death in 1876 of Jenny, Mrs. Jenny, a poem book author, ran the paper for several weeks until it was sold to H. N. Mather for five hundred dollars. Mather added a Sunday Edition. He was editorially in support of the Democratic Party.
